Transparency is a good idea, but how many people will be able to really look at the pay of one individual over another and honestly see the transparency? A person who has worked at the company for only 3 years, verse a person who has worked there for 10 years, both doing the same job, both having the same responsibilities. Should the person with only 3 years be paid the same as the person with ten years? The person with 3 years is going to say yes, they deserve the same pay because they are doing the same job and have the same responsibilities.
Pay transparency can be a double edged sword. When just looking at the pay rate, one dismisses all the past history of the individual, the work that went on before, the new guy was hired. There is a lot that a company takes into account when setting starting wages, standard raises, and bonuses. All of which a person can easily toss out the window when talking about pay. Why does the ten year employee rate higher pay than the three year employee when they are at the time, doing the same job, at the same skill level, and with the same quality.
When it comes down to just numbers next to a name and job description, they are pretty much meaningless in my opinion.
Transparency could lead people down a road they would after awhile wish they had not turned down.
