The importance, I feel, of getting into a home with a fixed mortgage early in life. Times are always lean it seems when first starting out as an adult. Cost go up every year never down. A house at age 25 was $65,000, at 35 it was 85,000, and now about $200,000. All of them 2 or 3 bedrooms and on good sized lots. The important thing to remember is to ignore the cries of deep despair of the bubble is bursting the sky is falling, and the housing market is crashing. The housing market did not crash during a time of high unemployment of high job loss, the housing market crashed supposedly for a lot of reasons. Mostly because people saw their house purchases as a financial investment and caved in to the hype.

A house is not a real financial investment, it should be for a home. It becomes a safety net of sorts in that during extreme dire times one has a place to still live and can drag things out while getting back on their feet.

In the Northern climes, yes a dryer is a necessity in this persons opinion, clotheslines are fine in the spring and Summer, but old moist air, well it does not aid much in the drying of the clothes, and trying to dry them in doors just puts lots of moisture on the windows that can cause frost build up in/on the windows. So yeah get a good dryer.
