The longer you are gone, the longer the fear on their part will last, they will get back to almost normal behavior toward you as you get back to your normal you, but there will always linger a little bit of fear turning to pity for a long time. Three years after I got back to full time work is how long it lasted for me. They were not cruel or intentionally cruel about it, but the fear, and the pity did get tiresome after awhile.
