I think the guy who said this was lying. Other accounts say that Saul fell on his sword and died. I think David had him killed because he thought too highly of the king and, by extension, himself. David kept calling Saul "God's anointed" when he was just another man.

I think the guy claimed that he killed Saul because he expected to be rewarded more for saying that.
