My school stories are full of emotion and pleasant moments, shocking life situations that gave me so much satisfaction as a teacher.
Receive a warm greeting, this beautiful HIVE community, learning more and more every day. Glad to be able to share with you my experiences, and grateful to this platform that provides the space to capture our experiences, today I want to bring an experience with a student who left me a pleasant satisfaction of life.
At least 6th grade... those were the words of the fifth grade teacher when I received Luis' (name I have changed for the purposes of my narration) folder in my classroom.
She explained to me that he was a boy who had difficulties, his mother had died and the boy lived with his grandmother of advanced age, precarious health and also did not know how to read or write, at home they also lived together with his younger sister.
In short, the teacher told me that we should make an effort to give Luis his 6th grade certificate so that he could at least look for something to do and work, because she did not believe that without knowing how to read and write the boy would be able to go to high school.
The first thing I noticed was that he was a very, very quiet boy, thin, quite dark and unnoticed. He played quietly with his classmates, but without being too noticeable.
He was quite receptive to me and I don't know why he awakened a maternal instinct in me, perhaps because of his vulnerability and I even perceived a certain fragility in him.
His family had very limited resources, they could barely afford a notebook and a pencil, his worn uniform was a product of donations as well as the rest of his clothes.
Because of this emotional attachment I was especially careful with Luis, he really hardly spoke and it was hard for him to look me in the eyes, he was isolated and not at all communicative, I asked him to be seated near my desk despite his size, I placed him on the side of the wall where his height was not a problem for the kids behind him.
Normally when we have children with special difficulties, we meet with the psychopedagogist to elaborate what we call Curricular Adaptation, which consists of an adaptation we make of the content to the student and his evaluation will then be made based on the indicators we established according to his academic level.
That is how I contacted the psychopedagogist and we studied Luis' case and proceeded to do his planning, she was also interested in his case, it seemed amazing to us that at 12 years old he had not managed to learn to read or write.
She made her evaluation but pointed out that it would be interesting to have a psychologist see him, as I had a psychologist friend, we sent him there. A few days later she called me to give me the results... and her answer was in summary something like Luis had not exercised his brain enough and that if we did the right thing he could do it.
That news was very encouraging because it implied that he did not have a difficulty that would prevent him from developing his learning, that is, he did not have a ceiling that would limit him.
That was how with the exercises and the proper attention Luis learned to read and write in a very short time, little by little he was catching up with his classes, he had his rhythm and I said to myself, good that he gets his 6th grade, that he knows how to read and write, that will help him to look for a job.
Luis as I told you was a very quiet boy but it turned out that one day a boy made him upset and he responded so violently that he made the boy bleed. This greatly upset the director, who asked me to be very emphatic in the measures to be taken with Luis.
I really just approached him and asked him what had happened, he told me that the other boy had made a nasty comment about his mother who was no longer alive and that made him very upset.
I talked to him and told him that violence is not the best way, well that was my duty as a teacher, but in my heart I have always believed that unfortunately when a child responds aggressively to bullying then the bully stops bothering him. However, in order to mediate and achieve a consensus among everyone, I got Luis to apologize in front of the boy for the blow he had delivered and in turn the boy apologized for the comment he had made against Luis' mother.
That was the only violent episode that Luis had during the whole school year, after that situation he became closer to me and we could have many topics of conversation.
Luis' situation at home was so precarious that after school he worked in a supermarket near his home, where he was in charge of putting the customers' products in bags, for that job he received his pay and also in many occasions a tip. With that pay, his grandmother told me, the boy helped with whatever was needed in the house.
That made me see how responsible the boy was, because while other children were getting out of school to play, he went to work.
One day I was talking to my husband's aunt and I don't know what prompted her to tell me that near her house there was a boy who always sat on the sidewalk after 9:00pm connecting to the wifi from his little laptop that the school had given him. She thought it was so wonderful how engaged the boy was with his homework.
I asked her why the boy wasn't connecting earlier, she replied: the boy works at the supermarket around the corner.... Then I realized that the boy who connected to my husband's aunt's wifi after work was Luis.
It turns out that there was a time that Luis missed 3 days in a row at school, that afternoon at the end of my day I went by Luis' house to see what was going on and well when I found out my heart crumpled and again touched my human fiber.
It turns out that Luis no longer had shoes in good condition to go to school, quickly with a friend I found him some shoes and he was ready to continue his school routine.
As the school year progressed, Luis was gradually catching up with the basic contents and was doing his activities to the extent of his abilities. This was a great satisfaction for me and for the psychopedagogue, we thought that with this he would have the tools to finish 6th grade and be able to look for a job, because we did not believe that he would advance in high school, due to the complexity that high school implied.
His grandmother with tears in her eyes was so grateful that Luis had finally learned to read and write and had passed 6th grade, that was a very emotional moment for me. He finally got out of 6th grade and I left the school that year to other functions, I never heard from Luis again....
One day many years later I meet Luis on the bus, wearing a merchant marine uniform... I greet him and he responds with much affection, I ask him what he does and I could not believe his answer: it turns out that Luis did enter the Liceo and not only that Luis graduated from high school and not only that Luis entered a Technological University Institute and was studying Naval Mechanics, I could not believe it. ... I couldn't believe it... that moment of seeing him like that with his uniform with his fellow students has been one of the most pleasant moments of my life in which I feel so happy to have been a teacher and to see that I was able to positively influence the lives of my students.
