MAMI ASI NO QUIERO VIVIR || MOMMY I DON'T WANT TO LIVE LIKE THIS
Hearing these words for the first time as a mom I felt that something was no longer under my control.
Hello to all this beautiful Hive community, especially to the Motherhood family, trying to catch up with my posts, after a few long days of traveling out of my country. Today I want to share with you this episode of my life where for the first time I panicked as a mother, scared by the vulnerability my daughter was going through.
My daughter Sofia is our first daughter and she was always characterized by having a very strong character, as a child she was very imposing, she cried for anything and at any time, she always wanted to get her own way and do what she wanted, which meant that as parents we had to be very determined and constant in the discipline we imposed on her.
From the time she started to crawl her personality came to the surface and from then until she was about 3 years old our education was intense and structured, today she is 14 years old and she continues to be determined and stubborn and with her adolescence and her false sensation that she already knows the world, we continue as they say in Venezuela to put brakes on her constantly.
She has always had an attachment to me, as a baby she would not stay with anyone, she would cry if I left her with others, it was until she was 3 years old and with the support of her younger sister that she would leave my bed and go to her room and more than once in the middle of the night she would get between the sheets.
Her process at school was also not very smooth, her first experience in a nursery was traumatic, she cried when I left her and when I arrived I found her swollen from crying so much. On Sundays around 5 p.m. she would start crying because she knew she had to go to school the next day.
As I am a teacher I was called to work in a school and to take away the torture of the nursery she was attending we decided to transfer her to the nursery of the school where she was going to work, the story was no different, although I explained to her that we were in the same place, she still cried.
The teachers told me that she spent a long time crying and calling me: "Mamita bella, mamita bella! She was like that all that year, and in the last months she had improved a lot.
At the end of the year I went to work at a public school and to avoid discomfort we enrolled her in class 1 and well, history repeated itself but this time for less time, it took her about 3 months to adapt and in the meantime more than once Sofia's teacher came to my classroom with her in her hands telling me: Sofia does not want to be in the classroom.
However, by the 4th month she had already created an affinity with her teacher, but this in the end resulted in her moving to room 2 where she had a new teacher, so she began the process of crying because she didn't want to be with a new teacher.
Her previous teacher was now going to teach room 3, but Sofia refused to have a new teacher and would not stop her crying episodes, finally the previous teacher proposed to keep her in her classroom and give her the room 2 classes. As a result, Sofia had only one teacher for all of preschool.
At the end of preschool we decided that for first grade she would study in a bilingual elementary school, Sofia was 6 years old, a little more mature and she understood that she would see me again and this time the farewell on the first day of school I remember it clearly: we left her in the classroom at her desk alone because she did not know anyone and with her eyes watering, but this time without crying.
I remember that day I had a terrible time at work, I was worried about how Sofia would feel, I could not concentrate on my work and I even felt like crying and going to look for her.
To my surprise, when I looked for her, she was already playing calmly with some girls who were her friends during her stay there until 6th grade.
EL MOMENTO DEL CAMBIO || THE TIME OF CHANGE
They were beautiful years of quality academic experiences and innovation, but due to the economic situation that the country was going through we had to take them out and take them to a less expensive one, because the school made the decision to increase the monthly fee and the amount was exorbitant for us.
The reality is that our budget was not even enough for another private school, but one of their uncles from abroad, in order to avoid the girls going to a public school, promised to make the payment in a less expensive one and we found a high school that adapted to our budget.
For us it was good news but for Sofia it was the end of the world, she was totally reluctant to leave her school and there began our process. Initially, as long as she did not start classes, she just kept her refusal, but without going any further.
A detail that made the climate even more gray was that the new school wore pants while she had been wearing a skirt, how hard it was for her to adapt to the pants! She didn't like any of them, none of them seemed good or pretty. To the point that we ended up buying one that despite a thousand searches she was never happy with.
The terror started with the beginning of classes, unbelievably Sofia started to cry because she did not want to go. To try to cheer her up we made the effort and bought her a phone, but it didn't work, she started to feel sadder and sadder and totally refused to change.
I invited her to read the story "Who has taken my cheese" by Spencer Johnson, which is exactly about adapting to change, although the situation of the book fit perfectly with hers, she did not feel better, but I know that it planted something inside her.
The situation was getting worse day by day, Sofia was not enjoying her stay at the high school, she would call me on the phone from the bathroom crying asking me to come and pick her up, I tried to explain to her that time would pass quickly and that soon she would be at home, to calm down... to breathe and go to her classroom.
Every time she left early she called to be picked up, because she could not tolerate staying at school if there were no classes, she did not enjoy free hours with her classmates.
Little by little as the days progressed and I thought he would get used to it, the situation took on bigger proportions, it was no longer just the crying at school, now he was telling me that he was getting very sleepy in the classroom because he was experiencing episodes of insomnia, during the night he could not fall asleep after 1:00am.
On her instagram statuses she would post scenes of sadness...it broke my heart..... Besides, when she was like that I had no rest to think about how she was going through it... although for a third party it could be silly for her the world was falling down.
That's how one night in the kitchen while we were making something for dinner, she told me crying "Mommy I don't want to live like this"... you can't imagine the feeling of anguish that invaded me when I heard my daughter say those words... I didn't want to amplify the problem but I shouldn't underestimate it either...
I made the mistake of creating the false hope that I would talk to the owner of her old school to see if she could return but under the guise of a scholarship, but this was the only thing that gave her some peace of mind at the time.
We quickly contacted a psychologist, but Sofia once told us that she did not want to attend and that if we forced her to go she simply would not talk. We did not force her but my husband and I attended the consultations so that she could guide us to do the right thing.
The first thing she told us was not to change her school, that this was a mourning process that Sofia had to go through, that we should talk to her a lot, share quality time with her, that we should be very very tolerant of her moods and that instead of scolding her for her behavior we should be super empathetic.
I told her to make up for my mistake, that unfortunately the school was no longer accepting scholarship students, since many children had withdrawn and the school was not going through its best moment. We started giving her teas at night and doing breathing exercises, the days went by and she was going through a hard process, but at all times we let her know that we cared about her and that we understood the magnitude of what this situation meant to her.
LA LECCIÓN || THE LESSON
Those days were not easy... every day we struggled to make going to school something normal, there was still some crying, some insomnia, but Sofia had decided to make it through.
And so it was... little by little she was adapting until she was able to enjoy being at school with her new friends.
Finally everything took its course and today we can do a retrospective exercise and she can see that she managed to overcome that difficulty and that what once made her feel that she no longer wanted to live, is now a lesson learned and a test of life overcome that I hope will serve her for the thousands of challenges that await her.
