In the history of schools there is always a kid who is always looking for fights, who constantly fights at recess, who makes the teachers' lives miserable. I did not escape this reality and I also had my own, but you can't imagine the turn the story took in the end.
Hello to all the beautiful community of Hive, I send you a fraternal greeting from my beautiful island of Margarita, I tell you that I already have a few posts uploaded and every day I learn a little more about this platform besides feeling very satisfied with my progress and everything I'm learning.
It's so curious that I feel that my brain is almost neuroprogrammed to see post topics anywhere haha, now it turns out that I take pictures of everything that I think can be a good content to develop. And always thinking how to be more efficient in the shortest time possible and improving the quality of the product.
As I have described in a previous post, I am a teacher and during the first years of my work I worked in private schools. There I was able to observe in terms of academic development that one of the main characteristics corresponds to the stimulation that most of the students receive at home.
Here in these private institutes there are many children where their parents have little time to dedicate to them, due to long working hours, on the other hand, where the mothers do not work and dedicate themselves to their care, in short, they are families that in general have the economic resources to stimulate the learning processes of the children, whether they are present or not.
These families can pay for private lessons for their children if they do not understand something, buy them books, invest in educational toys, among others. I am not referring to all of them, but in most cases there is evidence of greater academic stimulation, they have access to the internet, to travel, in short, their way of life influences the way they acquire and process knowledge.
In contrast, in the public institutions there are families of lower resources, where perhaps many of their parents are not at home either because they have to generate money, but unlike the previous group, they can stay alone or with a relative (usually grandparents) mostly without any pedagogical reinforcement, many spend their time outside the house playing with friends in the sector and few have access to the Internet.
In some homes mothers or grandmothers are present, but it is likely that many of them do not have the academic preparation, many do not know how to read or write and there is little they can support their children in terms of academics.
This is why the importance of a good teacher comes into play, a teacher who does not require the presence of the father to guarantee school success, who puts as little weight as possible on the family, since this would imply that a child who does not have the support of his or her family would be at a disadvantage.
My last years I worked in a public school in a fishing sector, formed mainly by many dysfunctional families, children for example who told us that their father or uncle or a relative was in prison.
I found cases of sexual abuse of little girls, abuses that occurred while mom and dad or only one of them worked and the little girl after school had to go home alone to her cousins and uncles who, far from taking care of her, took advantage of her smallness to do atrocious acts against them.
How many sad stories were engraved on the walls of those classrooms where I had to be....
But among those stories there were also those full of work, of effort, of mothers who did not rest and were there as we say in Venezuela: at the foot of the cannon with their children.
Working mothers who took time from where they did not have it to help their children in whatever way they could. And maybe academics was not their strong point, because as I said before, many of them had reached 6th grade and others did not know how to read or write, but what they did know was to make sure that their children arrived at school on time, that they did their homework, that they arrived with a clean uniform and with all their notebooks and school supplies.
When I say "Mothers" I do not want to devalue the fathers, but in this case, during all the years of experience I had, it was mostly the mothers who were in charge of the children's school care.
To give an example: in a meeting of parents and representatives of an enrollment of 37 students, only 2 or 3 fathers attended, the rest were the mothers. This small group of fathers of course was always congratulated by me.
The work in that school was hard, many asked me why I didn't change to another less hostile, less violent school, but I felt that that was where my work was, that was where the need for a good teacher was.
And good teachers there were! The school had the "Best" and together we juggled to get those kids and the school through.
That is where the story of "The playground fighter" comes in. In the school there was a very small boy that while he was in 1st and 2nd grade was a headache for the teachers, he was tiny and chubby, I remember his particular way of walking, his legs were short and he was swinging, almost always walking furiously through the corridors and in the yard, although he was small his ability to misbehave was of high level.
The structure of the school was a two story building, its windows were quite large and all overlooked the courtyard, one afternoon we heard a teacher screaming through the window and her students coming down to ask for help, we quickly went up to see what was going on.
To our astonishment it was him, El Peleón, with nothing more and nothing less than a wooden stick in his hand banging on the classroom door and threatening the teacher. All the children had come out and were shouting: run run, he is going to kill the teacher.
After a long time we managed to calm him down, we called his mother and that was the end of that episode. But he earned his name "Recess Brawler" because every day we had a fight during recess and this little boy was always the protagonist, if it wasn't the playground fight then it was the children who came to us and told us that our brawler was hitting or bothering another child.
Thus the school year passed between fights and conflicts, appointments with his mother and with the psychopedagogist and the teachers wishing for the year to end.
During my stay at the school I had been characterized by working with children who were labeled as "misbehavior", and it is interesting to note that in all the cases I had, love and affection were always the solution.
One fine day the Director of the school approached me and began to congratulate me for my performance and for how I had handled the different groups that were in my charge and that in view of that there was a child that he considered that if he was with me he could give results and positive changes... That is how El Peleón del Recreo came into my hands.
At the school our schedule was Integral, that is, from 8:00am to 4:00pm, the kids had breakfast, lunch and snack at the institution. It was really a long day.
My playground figter had a particular condition, he was diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), a specialist had recommended the use of a drug, but his mother did not like this idea, since, when taking them, he only felt drowsy and groggy.
Anderson (that is the name of the protagonist of this story) presented a very violent and intolerant behavior towards his classmates and his own frustrations.
In addition, it was difficult for him to be at his job and finish his activities, conflicts began at recess and that is where the interaction with his mother began, a hardworking woman who sacrificed herself for her children, working in a grocery store with a very tight schedule.
The father was a violent and not very affectionate man, she was submissive and passive, all this added to Anderson's hyperactivity condition opened a not very encouraging scenario.
The first thing we agreed with his mother and the school psychopedagogue was that he should not take the medication, we would try a shorter day, he should be there until 12:00 pm and not until 4:00 pm as the schedule established.
On the other hand, I did not pressure him to do all the activities, I gave him half of the work that was applied to the rest of the group and from there I evaluated his progress, this is what we call a curricular adaptation because this boy would be at a disadvantage if I evaluated him the same as the rest.
There was something particular that was happening as the days progressed, at 10 o'clock in the morning he always asked to go to the bathroom, I realized that his body needed movement, and we began to negotiate: I realized that his body needed movement, and we began to negotiate: to finish his activities and treat his classmates well, he was allowed to go out only to the psycho-pedagogic classroom (which had games and he was distracted in that place and the teacher could supervise him), sometimes the permission consisted of a walk around the school facilities, this was another level because the condition was not to get into trouble even once, because then the deal would be over.
Finally, and as far as my part was concerned, I was not to lose patience with his behavior, Anderson was one of those boys that if he got violent and was responded to in the same way then it only fed and grew his attitude.
Little by little we got along, the key to success was gaining his trust, respect and affection. Also making this whole plan a routine helped us to consolidate the work, it got to a point that Anderson already knew what to do, I can not deny that sometimes there were episodes but by the end of the year, we both enjoyed the school time and the changes were noticeable inside and outside the classroom and even further reached home.
That 3rd grade culminated in a harmonious way, without the desire to end the school year to get rid of the Recess Brawler and he was no longer the protagonist of the conflicts between students.
Time passed, I left to take on commitments in the state Educational Zone, then came my retirement... One afternoon I am in a grocery store and it is the store where Anderson's mom works ...6 years have passed since that 3rd grade, then she greets me with an indescribable affection and with tears in her eyes tells me: Anderson was just another kid since he got out of his class...I can't thank him enough teacher.
I have no words to describe my satisfaction, retirement can be a material achievement in the life of a teacher but these life stories are the ones that really fill me and make me feel that I fulfilled my purpose as a teacher, that my passion has fruits in the hearts of my children.
