Ekidna or pig thorn is the only animal of the Monotremata order that still survives in addition to the platypus. The four surviving species, native to Papua and Australia, all belong to the Tachyglossidae family. Ekidna is named after the name of a monster in ancient Greek mythology.
Ekidna is classified into two genera. The genus Zaglossus includes three surviving species and two extinct species (known only through fossils). The other genus is Tachyglossus where only one species is known.
