The War On Christmas
âHe just marched in and fell down on his bunk,â Tili the elf began. âHasnât said a word. Heâs been staring at the wall.â Rili thanked him and opened the door to the workerâs dorm. Gili sat, his legs curled up to his chest, rocking back and forth, staring at the wall in the half-lit room.
âHey Gili,â Rili said. He stepped inside the dorm and pulled up the blinds. âHeard you werenât feeling too good. Whatâs wrong?â
Gili said nothing. He continued staring, his elvish eyes a shade of absence, black circles hanging beneath them.
Rili stepped forward and put a hand on Giliâs shoulder. âI canât help you if you donât talk to me, Gili,â he said. âWhatâs wrong? Whatâs the matter?â
Gili turned his head to Rili, as if noticing him for the first time. The light slowly returned to his eyes. âWhatâs wrong?â Rili asked again.
âYou wonât believe what I caught Santa doingâŠâ Gili whispered.
***
Rili stormed out of the dorm, Tili chasing his heels down the shoddy hallway to the creaky elevator. âWell?â Tili asked. âWhat did he say? I heard him whispering.â
âWe need to get a hold of Rudolph. Now,â Rili said.
âWhat? Rudy? Whatâs the matter?â Tili asked, the nervousness building in his voice.
âDo you still remember how to use a cane spear?â Rili asked.
âA cane spear? We havenât used one of those in a thousand yearsâŠâ
âI want every able bodied elfman and elfwoman out in front of the workshop, armed with a cane spear at sundown.â Rili smashed the elevator call button repeatedly.
âThatâs crazy,â Tili said. âWhatâs happening?â
The elevator doors opened and Rili, foreman and village chief of the Northern Elves entered. âSantaâs dead,â he said.
âAnd the Cold has claimed him.â
The elevator closed. Tili collapsed to his knees. âMy god,â he
whispered out loud. âIt canât be.â
The darkness of the hallway terrified him. Indeed, it seemed to call to him. Begging him to wander inside of it. Tili, for the briefest moment, heard a sound that, despite not seeing it, instinctively conjured an image into him mind. Of a skull, laughing.

Rudolph drew the arrow, firing it into the target. It flew straight enough, but landed just outside the rim. He swore, trying to load the bow again. But the booze was rising hard, now. And he fumbled with the arrow and it landed on the snow. âDamn this piece of shit,â he mumbled. âGod damn elvish piece of shit.â
âSuppose itâs not a good time,â Rili said, wandering in from the frost clouds of the Northern Plains. âNot happy with our trinkets?â
âAn elf couldnât make a proper train or sleigh, let alone a bow and arrow.â Rudolph spat on the ground. âWhat business have you with me, little one?â
âThe Cold has returned,â Rili said. âItâs consumed Claus. The wife is missing as well. Darkness settles upon the city.â
âAnd you expect my help?â Rudolph asked, lighting a cigarette. âYou think the deers have any skin in this game?â
âI do,â Rili said, fixing his boo-bit-y cut-sy red hat against the frigid arctic winds. âIâve called my elves people for the fight. Ordered them out in spears. Weâre storming Clausâ manse at sundown in hopes to catch him off guard. Heâs consuming us, Rudy. Eating elfmen and elfwomen both. Like little gingerbread people.â
âYeah, well thatâs not my problem.â Rudolph picked up his bottle of vodka, staring at the picture of his long dead deerwife. âItâs yours.â
âWhat happened to you, Rudy?â Rili asked. âYou used to be something. A leader of your people. And now look at you. Lost in grief over a deer that cared for you not.â
Rudy guzzled more of the vodka, his red nose beginning to illuminate a hint of ruby light. âWhat do you know?â Rudy shouted, his eyes narrow in anger. âWhat does an elf know about love?â
âEnough to fight for it, Rudy. We need you. We need you and the deers.â
âThe deersâŠare gone.â Rudy looked away, chugging the vodka and wandering off into the snow.
âI know you, Rudy!â Rili called after his old friend. âAnd this isnât you!â
Rudy hesitated, his outline fading against the coming snows, before running off. Rili followed him as far as he could before the snows consumed him.
