Sometimes, when life hits us hard on the surface, we sometimes wallow in self-pity or, we rise up, take the pain in, and move regardless. At this moment, though, we are surely going through a lot. No one likes pain unless there's a beautiful thing to come out of it.
Just like our mothers go through the pain of labour every time, knowing there's a lot at stake and how a father struggles endlessly just to bring something home. It is at this stage that little things matter.
Being from a country like mine, it is a necessity to say to a stranger, "Excuse me please, I am sorry for the disturb" just before you can talk. And, this is because people are going through a lot. From family problems to education, economic crisis, and all other heartbreaking news. It surrounds the masses each day, and for no reason, you'd see many people angry.
It's like we are all in this bandage called life and it is taking 99% of our breath and giving back 25 to 30% to breathe back and everyone is unstable, restless and in need of a long space. But, life doesn't permit those long vacations or even the shortest ones for most of us.
And, it is at this moment that the most little thing matters. Kindness goes a long way, and "I am sorry" solves a lot of headaches.
Small gestures go a long way. Just like a wife, after preparing a good meal for your husband, the next thing to do that may seem unnecessary is welcoming him with a huge smile and a kiss to his temples. Appreciating his effort for the day as you take his bag from him. These things work miracles in the heart of a man who has gone to face all sorts of hardship outside.
He surely will feel relieved, and he may cry deeply for receiving such love and attention. Most times, those little gestures hit a fragile loving nerve that makes even a strong man's feet buckle.
And, as the husband, things like appreciating your wife for taking care of the home, kissing her when she least expected, telling her she's doing so well, pampering her and seeing the little things she does and pointing it out and embracing her works miracle.
Assisting your woman in little things like housework makes a woman so emotional and thankful for having you in her life.
Appreciating the littlest gesture goes farther into someone's heart. As a child, calling your parents if you are far from them and appreciating them goes a long way. You may say, "They don't feed me anymore, I send money home to them". But, it doesn't matter. You never know what they are going through when you call and what your words at that moment mean to them.
Also, as a friend, saying nice words to your friends sometimes goes a long way, especially if you guys aren't into those nice chummy words. Just try it out one day and see their expression. They may tell you a lot, but there are things they may be holding out on because it shatters them. And your words at that moment will surely perform magic.
In any relationship you find yourself, little gestures matter. Wake up, take a picture, and put a nice caption before sending it to your guy or lady. Pick some funny pictures sometimes and send them to them out of the blue. It may seem unnecessary as you people will talk, right? But, it can work miracles, and we all need a miracle in life, right?
You'll never know until you try these things out.
You can also sing for them. Wake up and pick up your phone to sing to your Mom and Dad. Send a voice note of yourself singing a song to your husband or wife even when you both said goodbye to yourselves some minutes ago. Send songs to your friend(s) and sing yourself a good song.
I do that to myself because music works miracles, and it is the unnecessary necessary little gesture I deserve.
This is my response to the HiveGhana Community Contest. I hope you have fun joining in just like I did.
