Because we live in an area where the power goes out every time a cat sneezes, it was no surprise when my wife and I woke up about two in the morning last fall to discover it had happened again. My wife began to reach for her cell phone when I laughed and said we've just been hit by an EMP. As soon as I said this I began thinking about the consequences that we would surely face if this was the case. Using this opportunity as a session to ensure that I would be able to remain calm and keep my wife and children safe I ran everything through my mind that I could think of. Suddenly, I realized that many preppers are completely unprepared for such an event because one of the most important items they use for their preps will quickly become a liability, and they don't even realize it!
Most preppers spend crazy amounts of money to ensure their valuable items such as guns, ammo, important documents, and even silver and gold remain safe. Many however forget about the damages inflicted on electronic devices by an EMP when they purchase a safe. If an EMP is ever used against the citizens of the U.S. preppers everywhere will be forced to fight their way in to their safes because the electronic access panel will be rendered useless. How will you gain access to your most valued items if this happens to you?
To remedy this situation I suggest that if you haven't yet purchased a safe, you buy one with a combination lock that doesn't rely on any type of electric panel for access. If you already own one with push button access, you may want to consider selling it to someone who would be thrilled to simply own a safe, and reinvest the money you make from that sale into one that has no electronic access. Don't get me wrong, I love the electronic access to my safe. It is both fast and simple. Since I came to the realization that it could cause problems, I have been looking for one that might have both options for entry. I'm not sure if they exist, but if I could use electronic access as long as it works, and still have a combination lock that would override the electric access it would be like having the best of both worlds. If I can't find one like this, I will be looking into purchasing a safe with the combination locking device.
If you don't have the money or the desire to replace your electronic safe, I suggest getting a behemoth sized pry bar because if an EMP is ever detonated over us, you will be needing it! Make sure that if this is the way you go your oversized prying mechanism is hidden really well so that no intruders can find it and make their way off with your valuables.
Whatever you decide, make sure you have a good plan in place to deal with the situation if you ever need to.
