Reporter Mr Hadi Azmi wrote what he saw with his naked eyes at the "raid" last night:
It was surreal. I was tasked to go to Bukit Bintang at 11.30pm because Datuk Amar Singh is giving a press conference there. For the Head of Commercial Crime Investigation to call a presser at midnight means it's something big, but I didn't expect it to be this big.
I was standing there, seeing with my own eyes as trolley after trolley full of bags, stacked by the half dozens emerge from the condo lobby and lifted into the police trucks outside. First one truck, then two. Those luggage cases, some of them were so heavy that three police officers had to lift it up into the back of the truck, and when it landed on the steel platform, it landed with a thud. Solid. Who knows what's inside. Then came the orange boxes. I zoomed in and saw the photos stuck on it: lo and behold, it's the Birkin bags. We reporters are not well off, most have never seen the inside of a Hermés, let alone a box of its merchandise. Around me people started chattering as they too peer into their long lenses. "Birkin". Trolley, after trolley after godawful trolley emerged until one truck was full from it. Then came the second truck, full. Then the third truck, full. Three police trucks full from one person's collection of handbags. I'm still dizzy thinking about it. All these luxury when we are told to take second jobs, 'pagi bertugas di pejabat, malam berkhidmat di jalan raya', says the Uber ad. Schools saw their budget slashed, hospitals saw their budget slashed. Times are hard they said, but then they turned around and proudly declared that noneother than the World Bank itself said our economy is stronger than ever! Perhaps in the privacy of their luxury homes they turned around again and laughed. This isn't just greed. This is a disease. I'm not the one who is sick, oh but God knows, I am so fucking sick.
