My reading of the situation with two full days of campaigning left before polling on Wednesday, May 9 2018 ~ we’re on the home stretch ~ is that this election will not be a Tsunami Melayu or even a Tsunami Cina but a Tsunami Rakyat. Malaysians of all ethnicities are equally determined to rid the nation of thieving kleptocrats and incompetent kakistocrats. We all want justice, no leakages, a well-managed economy to benefit all of us, not just the political elite and their cronies.
Please remember PAS is working hand in glove with UMNO to split the Malay vote, so a vote for PAS is a vote for UMNO. I can’t wait to wake up on Thursday to a new beginning.
Now is not the right time for the Green Party of Malaysia to get actively involved in general elections. There are so many structural and institutional reforms that need to take place first, that are of extreme urgency. We really need to put a fair system of government that truly displays justice in place first. Nobody in government the past 60 years has been truly interested in our collective future as a multiethnic and multireligious nation. They have been too busy self-serving and building dynasties.
The white line on May 9 2018 indicates a demarcation ~ a clean break ~ from the opaque past; the previous way of managing the nation. After May 9, various institutional reforms will be put in place by the new, more transparent, regime. The Green Party will continue to create awareness of green issues, pollution reduction; preservation and conservation of wildlife habitat, population reduction, sustainability, renewable energy, eradication of pesticides and fossil fuels, to name just a handful. We aim to educate the public so as to create a demand-pull effect, from the grassroots up, not a top-down marketing-push modality. We need the people of Malaysia of various ethnicities and religions to define a collective future. A viable and sustainable future for all of us, as Malaysians and as citizens of the world. No more talk of the future of the Malays, the future of the Indians, the future of the Chinese and so on. We aim to be totally inclusive and so we need to envisage and work towards a win-win collective future for all humans, and, for all animal and plant species. We have come to realise that we humans are all but one race ~ the human race. And as a species, we have biotic relationships with a whole host of other species, from the bacteria that lives in our gut and other microorganisms that live within us that we depend on symbiotically to the plants and animals we rely on as food. So our collective future, by necessity, needs to be all-inclusive.
We need to change the way we do things for things to change. Doing “business as usual” has brought us to where we are now. To change the way we do things, we need to first make changes to our mindset, our economy, our education, in fact, just about everything we do because, through the web of life, everything has an impact on the ecology. The more radical the changes to want to make, the more radical the changes in our mindset that is required. Be prepared to be disrupted, not just by disruptive technology, but by a creative disturbance. As education becomes pervasive and ideas and innovations flourish, old paradigms will be broken and replaced by shifts to newer, more accurate systems and models of the world we live in.
The time for change is now. The general elections of May 9 will be the first of many more radical paradigm shifts to come.
We need to have proportional representation, local elections and other institutional reforms in place before we can make the necessary impact for a sustainable future. But for now, do your duty for regime change on May 9. See you on the other side.
