Dragonstone (Game Of Thrones scenario) in real life![ENG-ESP]
Today I wanted to tell you about a magical place I visited, especially magical for those who are fans of the series "Game of Thrones" and "The House of the Dragon".
I'm sure you will remember the beautiful staircase up to "Dragonstone" in the series, a castle in the middle of the sea where the dragons of Daenerys Targaryen of the storm flew over, she who does not burn, breaker of chains, mother of dragons, Khaleesi of the Dothraki, Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Lady of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm 馃ぃ.
Hoy quer铆a hablaros sobre un lugar m谩gico que visit茅, sobretodo m谩gico para quienes son fans de las series de "Juego de Tronos" y "La Casa del Drag贸n".
Seguro recordarar茅is la bonita escalinata que hab铆a hasta llegar a "Rocadrag贸n" en la serie, un castillo en medio del mar por el que sobrevolaban los dragones de Daenerys Targaryen de la tormenta, la que no arde, rompedora de cadenas, madre de dragones, Khaleesi de los Dothraki, Reina de los 脕ndalos y los Rhoynar y los Primeros Hombres, Se帽ora de los Siete Reinos y Protectora del Reino 馃ぃ..
Well, many of the locations of these series were filmed in different parts of Spain, in fact some of my friends appeared in the series as "extra" actors playing Dothrakis and so on.
Specifically, "Dragonstone" is actually the islet of "San Juan de Gaztelugatxe" which is located in Euskadi, northern Spain. The long staircase that appears in the series, as well as its landscape, is real. But the CGI and special effects placed a castle and dragons at the top, when in reality what awaits us at the top is a hermitage, which has a bell that you have to ring when you arrive and make a wish.
Pues bien, muchas de las localizaciones de estas series fueron rodadas en diferentes puntos de Espa帽a, de hecho algunos de mis amigos aparecieron en la serie como actores de "extra" haciendo de Dothrakis y dem谩s.
En concreto, "Rocadrag贸n" es en realidad el islote de "San Juan de Gaztelugatxe" que est谩 situado en Euskadi, al norte de Espa帽a. La larga escalinata que aparece en la serie, as铆 como su paisaje, es real. Pero el CGI y los efectos especiales colocaron en lo alto de la cima un castillo y unos dragones, cuando en realidad lo que nos espera arriba del todo es una ermita, la cual tiene una campana que has de tocar cuando llegas y pedir un deseo.
And yes, all that route that you can see in the images until you reach the small chapel at the top, are 241 steps of sturdy stone that will make you strengthen your legs and gluteus more than those that Rocky Balboa climbed in Philadelphia with the sound of the song "Eye of the Tiger".
Y s铆, todo ese recorrido que se ve en las im谩genes hasta llegar a la peque帽a ermita de la cima, son 241 escalones de robusta piedra que te har谩n fortalecer m谩s las piernas y los gl煤teos que aquellos que sub铆a en Philadelphia Rocky Balboa al son de la canci贸n de "Eye of the Tiger".
To get to this place, I stayed nearby, in a town called Bakio. The hotel overlooked the sea. Although normally in the north of Spain it is not very sunny, it is more of a humid and rainy climate, so even if you visit in summer the temperature will be much cooler than if you go to other places further south.
Para llegar hasta este lugar, me aloj茅 cerca, en un pueblo llamado Bakio. El hotel ten铆a vistas al mar. Aunque normalmente en el norte de Espa帽a no est谩 muy soleado, sino que hace m谩s un clima h煤medo y lluvioso, por lo que a pesar de que lo visitases en verano la temperatura ser谩 mucho m谩s fresca que si vas a otros lugares m谩s hacia el sur.

Crossing the town, we will reach some signs to get to the islet of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, located in the town of Bermeo. When I went there were two ways to get there: One was more direct, and the other had to go around more. It turns out that the more direct way was closed because they were doing road works, so I had to walk a long path up a hill, and then down and back to the asphalt before the stairs I wanted to climb.
For those who do not go by car, to get there you can use a bus from the city of Bilbao in the Plaza Moy煤a. Also in summer the line A3517 of Bizkaibus buses arrives here. There is also a Bizkaibus service between Bermeo and Bakio.
Besides, from Bilbao you can hire a guided tour to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, if you prefer not to do it on your own.
Cruzando el pueblo, llegaremos a unas indicaciones para llegar hasta el islote de San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, situado en la localidad de Bermeo. Cuando fui hab铆an dos maneras de llegar: Una era m谩s directa, y otra hab铆a que dar m谩s vuelta. Resulta que la que era m谩s directa estaba cerrada porque estaban haciendo obras en la carretera, por lo que tuve que recorrer una larga a senda a pie que sub铆a una colina, para luego bajarla y llegar de nuevo hasta el asfalto previo a las escaleras que quer铆a subir.
Para los que no vay谩is en veh铆culo, para llegar pod茅is usar un bus que hay desde la ciudad de Bilbao en la plaza Moy煤a. Tambi茅n en verano la l铆nea A3517 de autobuses Bizkaibus llega hasta aqu铆. Adem谩s hay un servicio de Bizkaibus entre Bermeo y Bakio. Y tambi茅n, desde Bilbao se puede contratar una visita guiada a San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, si prefieres no hacerlo por tu cuenta.

I reached the part where I had to start climbing the steps. Just before, there are a couple of informative signs about the hermitage at the top, and about the animals that live in these seas.
Llegu茅 a la parte en la que ya hab铆a que comenzar a subir los escalones. Justo antes, hay un par de carteles informativos sobre la ermita que est谩 arriba, y sobre los animales que viven en estos mares.
I climbed up and enjoyed the view.

And fighting against the wind rising over the Cantabrian Sea, I finally arrived at the little chapel to ring the bell!

The hermitage that exists today is not the original one. Due to different battles or fires that have occurred here, the church has had to be rebuilt on multiple occasions. It is believed that the first hermitage was built in the ninth century, to become a convent during the twelfth century.
The hermitage also had a defensive purpose. The King of Castile Alfonso XI besieged Gaztelugatxe in 1334 when he pursued Juan N煤帽ez de Lara. Juan made himself strong on the rock along with other knights of Bizkaia, and resisted all the attacks for more than a month.
La ermita que hay a d铆a de hoy no es la original. Debido a diferentes batallas o incendios que han ocurrido aqu铆, la iglesia ha tenido que ser reconstruida en m煤ltiples ocasiones. Se cree que la primera ermita fue construida en el siglo IX, para convertirse en convento durante el siglo XII.
La ermita tuvo tambi茅n un objetivo defensivo. El rey de Castilla Alfonso XI siti贸 Gaztelugatxe en el a帽o 1334 cuando persigui贸 a Juan N煤帽ez de Lara. Juan se hizo fuerte en el pe帽贸n junto a otros caballeros de Bizkaia, y resisti贸 durante m谩s de un mes todos los ataques.
In addition, due to the inaccessibility of the rocky islet, relentlessly battered by the waves of the sea, some pirates and corsairs believed that valuable treasures were hidden here. So assaults have been committed on several occasions, among others, in the late sixteenth century it is said that the English privateer Sir Francis Drake burned the hermitage and Huguenot heretics from La Rochelle took Izaro and Gaztelugatxe stealing everything they found there and throwing his poor hermit down the cliff. Por lo que se han cometido asaltos en diversas ocasiones, entre otros, a finales del siglo XVI se dice que el corsario ingl茅s Sir Francis Drake quem贸 la ermita y herejes hugonotes, procedentes de La Rochelle tomaron Izaro y Gaztelugatxe robando todo lo que encontraron all铆 y lanzando a su pobre ermita帽o por el acantilado. El 煤ltimo incidente sucedi贸 en 1978, cuando la ermita fue incendiada y destruida, lo que conllev贸 a la 煤ltima reconstrucci贸n importante de la misma en el a帽o 1983.
