Like many people, I’m a huge Kevin Hart fan. I’ve loved his stand-up comedy and enjoyed his tv shows, movies and even his podcast. But, as I began to see Kevin Hart in more and more movies, I noticed something… most of these movies are the same on the surface. Now I know the argument can be made that a lot of movies are similar on the surface, but none quite like movies starring Kevin Hart in recent years. Let me give you an example. Kevin is an underachieving boyfriend/fiance/spouse with great ideas. His girlfriend/fiance/spouse is extremely successful and supportive of him. Unfortunately, the girlfriend/fiance/spouse’s family is not as supportive of Kevin Hart and seems to dislike him. So in order to prove himself or obtain his goal Kevin goes on some whacky adventure that he tries to keep his girlfriend/fiance/spouse from knowing about. At the end of the movie, he comes clean to her about what was going on, but she never plays a significant role in the movie. Which Kevin Hart Movie am I talking about? ALL OF THEM. I watched two movies back to back (Me Time and the Man from Toronto) and while I was watching each movie I kept wondering “Did I see this already?” followed by thoughts of “I know what's going to happen next.” That’s when it hit me that the framework for these movies are pretty much all the same. Now, Kevin Hart is not the only actor to do this Cough Dwayne the Rock Johnson, Jason Statham, and All the Fast and Furious Movies Cough. Here is the difference. Those movies are turn-off-your-brain fun, and Kevin Hart’s movies have been lull-me-to-sleep boring.
I hope that Kevin Hart continues to be successful, but that he also entertains with new and original ideas. Not just the same storylines that he made popular years ago.
Down below are reviews of Me Time and the Man From Toronto.
P.S. Jimanji is dope tho.
