We all enjoy (and endure) vivid lives from our own perspective. LIke a multi-palette dream that we're convinced is real, our experience can be treasured as unique but it is equally common on some fundamental level.
I was writing a bio for an art gallery recently in an attempt to lure patrons in to buy my recordings. It was an interesting exercise in polishing some brilliance yet trying to retain a down to earth sensibility that would endear strangers reading the profile to me, so they might perhaps relate yet be impressed by my art. (In the least curious enough to shell out $15 to hear my songs).
In reality there are thousands like me trying to extract some coin from making art, from living a vivid life, from standing apart from the crowd.
Anyhow,
I ended up writing it in the 3rd person and I'm wondering if this creates too much distance between the artist and the potential patron. What do you think? I'm a kiwi, we're known for being a bit shy when it comes to self promotion. However, I've realised if I want that computer upgrade and internet connection, I have to promote myself ( no I don;t have a manager). So here is the bio .. I'd verily appreciate some feedback. Thanks Steemit People... <3
"Dunedin, New Zealand based singer songwriter Kerensa Stephens has enjoyed a long and exciting artistic career. In her early life, Kerensa focused on dance, with music as a secondary practice; the 90's reversed this. Initially she sang in experimental rock bands, such as Children's Television Workshop and Waste The Earth. This underground arty exposure suited and helped her develop a lyrical, poetic writing style.
When the colourful, wondrous world of the Rave dance scene swept through the New Zealand countryside, Kerensa became enchanted by electronica and dance music.
By the early 00's she found herself singing with local electronic composer ecophonik. They developed a strong and extensive set which saw them invited to play a number of larger festivals in NZ, notably Canaan Downs Festival, Parihaka, Kaikoura Roots Festival, Soundsplash and Dunedin Winter Solstice Party. Simultaneously, she developed an album of tunes with Baden French laughin' gas, these remain unreleased, regardless, they are gems.
In the mid 00's, Kerensa was introduced to Auckland based electronica luminary Michael Westcot aka Terra Nine. She wrote a number of songs for two of his well-received albums, Streamofconsciousness and Breathe. They toured in the European summer of 2008, playing at the Hadra Festival in France and Full Moon Festival in Germany and in New Zealand at Prana Festival.
Ott remixed their track 'No Return' and it took off, being played extensively in Europe.
From then on Kerensa expanded her collaborative relationships, writing and singing for Greek based label Cosmicleaf, with such artists as Side Liner [Dreamstealers, Dreamer] and Zero Cult [Vacuum, Pop Insanity]. Projects with Lemonchill (Israel), Tempest Chill's Red Eye Express and Arcane Trickster (Melbourne), Jac Grenfell (Port Chalmers), Moscow based Sensorica, and master producer, Forbes Williams De Novo ensued.
Most recently, Kerensa collaborated with French trip hop producer Tony Modi and in under a year they released an EP via Cosmicleaf (digital) entitled 'Tangled' to some acclaim.
2017 has also seen the Cosmicleaf release of Aviatrix, a compilation of collaborations with Side Liner, Zero Cult and Arcane Trickster, chosen from the past 7 years.
Aviatrix continues to write and expand, dream and dance, sing and produce original songs across diverse genres from Lounge, to drum & base, ambient techno, trance aria, dub, psysoul, gypsy folk and psybiant.
Kerensa also composes soundtracks and enjoys melding blues and jazzy tones with experimental sometimes filmic soundscapes. She intends to create a few more covers for fun in the near future."
