Hello my friends, photography lovers.
I continue to introduce you to the coins of various countries from my collection. And I am still convinced that they are works of art and they are very interesting to photograph. especially if the shooting is done in macro photography mode. Then you can easily see all the small details of the coinage.
And I really sincerely regret that people use these coins only for their intended purpose - as money. And they do not pay attention to their beauty and informativeness. After all, many coins have been issued and are being issued as memorabilia or a reminder of some significant event for the country or the world.
Today I present to you a U.S. five-cent coin minted in 2004.
It is made of a copper-nickel alloy and has a white metal color. The obverse of the coin depicts the profile of the third president of the United States, Thomas Jefferson.
At the bottom right, near the tip of the pigtail of the president's wig, you can see a very small letter "D". This means that this copy was minted at the Denver Mint.
Approximately 340 thousand of these coins were minted there. And there was also minting in the cities of San Francisco and Philadelphia (there are also US state mints there).
Why was it decided to decorate the obverse of the coin with Jefferson's profile in 2004? The fact is that the period of his presidency was famous for two important events for the United States. First, it is the purchase of France's colonies in North America.
These were huge territories. Now six (!) states and partially nine more (!) states are fully located on them. It was a very profitable deal, the cost of one hectare of land was about 7 cents.
And secondly, this is the first land expedition across the country from St. Louis to the Pacific coast.
This expedition was led by American researchers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.
The reverse of the coin bears the names of these discoverers, and also depicts a boat on which they had to navigate the rivers of the country.
Their task was to find a short waterway through the country to the ocean. Actually, this expedition became a harbinger of the acquisition of French territories. She justified this deal.
A television series dedicated to this expedition, Lewis and Clark, is due to be released in the United States this year.
The explorers passed through all the French territories from east to west, then through the lands of the Indians and reached the Pacific Ocean, where they founded Fort Mandan.
Now this fort is located on the territory of North Dakota and it houses a memorial dedicated to this expedition.
