Hello Hivers,

schermata_2021_12_15_alle_14.09.32.png

today I will try to write a post in two languages, Italian (my mother tongue) and English (my working language).
Last Wednesday I decided to go and visit a place I had heard a lot about, but never had the chance to see: The Rocchetta Mattei, located in the small town of Riola, really close to the border between Emilia Romagna and Tuscany.

I left my house around 12.00, since I had booked the visit at 14.45 and it takes about 2h to arrive. The cost of the ticket is 10 Euros, which considering that the ticket includes the presence of the guide who explains all the history and peculiarities of the Rocchetta and lasts 1h and 10 min, I would say that it is an honest price.
Let's start from the story of the founder of Rocchetta Mattei, the count Cesare Mattei .

Conte/Count Cesare Mattei

ENG - The Count is a very eccentric character, born in Bologna in 1809, was during his life, a politician, man of letters and homeopath .

He was one of the founders of the Cassa di Risparmio di Bologna (which in recent years has acquired the Rocchetta and has been involved in its restructuring), and received his office as Count from Pope Pius IX following a land donation. For two years he was also a member of the Parliament of Rome. After the death of his mother, due to a tumor, he decided to leave its political life and devoted himself to the study of medicine.

Developing the theories of Hahnemann (founder of homeopathy) he elaborated a new medical theory that he called Electromeopathy and started the production of remedies exporting them also abroad. His product was a worldwide success and made his personal patrimony grow dramatically, allowing him to acquire different possessions, among which the Rocchetta. Following some wrong financial choices by his nephew, Luigi Mattei, predestined heir and co-owner of almost all the properties, a very serious economic crisis hit the family. The ruin threatened to overwhelm all the patrimony, including the Rocchetta (many other family assets were sold).
To recover the situation, he decided to disinherit his nephew and thanks to the help of his collaborator Mario Venturoli (whom he will later adopt as a sign of gratitude) he managed to heal the situation. Even today, Venturoli's offspring, although not of noble extraction, still consider themselves a noble family and keep the suffix of conti. Among other things, in the last years of his life, Mattei, now very paranoid, disinherited Marioli and his wife because he suspected that they had tried to kill him (through poisoning). He died in 1896 at the age of 87.

The history of the Rocchetta in brief / La storia della Rocchetta in breve

The unique building is located in the municipality of Grizzana Morandi, near (as previously mentioned) Riola di Vergato. Built on a rocky spur, it is a bizarre and fantastic construction, the sum of various styles: the Moorish one prevails, copied from the Alhambra in Granada (as a reminder there are the tiles of some walls) and from the mosque-cathedral of Cordoba.

The structure has hosted prominent figures such as the Prince of Bavaria and Tsar Alexander II. Mattei's remedies are even mentioned in Dostoevsky's Brothers Karamazov .
During the Second World War, the Rocchetta was completely stripped of its furniture and furnishings, raided by the occupying troops. Years of neglect and ruin will follow for the Rocchetta, so much so that it will also become the "home" for many displaced people. Among these, our guide Elisabetta, told us that the Bologna mystery writer, Loriano Macchiavelli, spent time there with his father during his childhood and later decided to set one of the novels there he, i.e. Crimes of ordinary people. In 2005, the restoration and reopening to the public in 2015 will take place to avoid its complete ruin, thanks to the Cassa di Risparmio di Bologna, which, as mentioned above, had the count himself among its founders.

The central courtyard / Il cortile centrale

The fascinating entrance hall with primitive figures on the walls has a Moorish arch supported by two small sculptures, the left with a demonic face and the right human. It leads into the large central courtyard, where the visitor can admire the different architectural styles that characterize the Rocchetta. Above the entrance arch, two shelves in white stone with lion heads, acanthus and coat of arms support the balcony of the Pope's Chamber. In the center of the courtyard there is a large fountain, obtained from the baptismal font of a nearby church.

The room of the ninety / La sala dei novanta

1639317630316.jpg

Originally conceived by Mattei as a mausoleum dedicated to Queen Victoria, it was later transformed into a ballroom by the adopted son Mario Venturoli at the beginning of the twentieth century. The large oval window bears the image of Cesare Mattei with the date of his birth. The room derives its name from the myth that the eccentric landlord wanted to celebrate his nineties here with eighty-nine ninety-year-olds. "Unfortunately" for him he will die at 87.

Chapel / Cappella

1639317630262.jpg

From the vestibule of the Sala dei Novanta, one can go up the staircase and enter the iconic Chapel. The space combines elements of Islamic Arab culture / architecture, such as arches inspired by those of the Mezquita in Cordoba, with others of the Italian medieval architectural tradition. Its structure and decorations are made with local materials including plaster, concrete, brick and wood. The ceiling decorations are not wooden, but painted canvases that reproduce inlays with golden flowers, the latter instead in wood. The room, which develops vertically, gives completely opposite sensations depending on where you look. Looking up it seems to be in a very large room, but as soon as you look horizontally you realize that we are actually inside a room of a few square meters.

Hanging courtyard / Cortile pensile

1639317630175.jpg

Leaving the chapel, one can go up the short staircase on the left and continue to the hanging garden, where you can admire the buildings that make up the Rocchetta, such as the square tower of the Count or the circular tower of the Vision. The concrete balustrades that simulate wood accompany the visitor passing under an ancient architrave, up to a second panoramic position: the view of the Apennine mountains is breathtaking.

Courtyard of the lions / Cortile dei leoni

1639317630125.jpg

Climbing the staircase leads to an area with exotic decorations, whose entrance is guarded by two lions. The Courtyard of the Lions is inspired by the much larger courtyard of the Alhambra in Granada. In the center, the fountain with four lions is surrounded by a splendid portico full of stuccoes. The panels above the arches are imprinted with the image of the Tower of Vision, the logo of the Mattei medicaments, while above an Arabic inscription runs along the four sides of the structure. The writing in question, written by some Bolognese who knew nothing of Arabic, quotes as follows:
"Non vi è Dio al di fuori di Dio"
"There is no God but God"
while it is assumed that the original version should have a slightly different meaning. Finally, the walls under the portico are covered with high quality Sevillian tiles.

Music Hall / Sala della musica

1639317629992.jpg

The hall was the place where Cesare and his family loved listening to music, also given the documented relationship between the Mattei family and the great composer Gioacchino Rossini . As in other rooms of the Rocchetta, today you can see, but above all listen to, a selection of the vast and relevant collection of Marino Marini mechanical musical instruments (hereinafter the photos of these wonderful instruments).

1639317630052.jpg

Among these I wanted to emphasize the graphophono (in the photo above), used to record people's voices. You had to talk inside the cavity and in the meantime turn the crank for 160 revolutions per minute (whoever had to do it, had to have a very trained arm).

Our guide told us who the woman in the portrait was, but I have to admit that I forgot 😅.

Red Room, the office of the Count / Sala Rossa, lo studio del conte

1639317629874.jpg

Retracing your steps, you finally reach the Red Room, so called because according to tradition the two rooms were divided by a red curtain and perhaps it was used as Mattei's studio. In this room the thing that shocked me the most is the roof, which at first glance seems to be made of wood. While our guide explained to us that those brown nubs that show up are nothing more than pieces of paper held together by glue. The truly incredible thing is how all this has been preserved even during the years of abandonment and total decay of the building. Even a small fire would have been enough to cancel everything, but we thank that nothing happened otherwise we would have been deprived of the privilege of being able to visit such a marvel.

Tomb of the count / Tomba del conte

1639317629982.jpg

The splendid majolica on two sides shows the stars classified according to the astral hierarchies of the time (Astronomy was one of the many interests of the Count), two inscriptions in the scrolls that recall the greatness of Creation and the Universe compared to the minute and fragile human condition.

View from the outside / Vista dall'esterno

Before finishing our guided tour, I asked Elisabetta if she could indicate a nearby point from where to admire the Rocchetta from the outside in all its beauty. She showed me a street immediately at the exit, which after a while rises on a hill and from there, from an open space surrounded by greenery, it is possible to admire the building.

Conclusion/Conclusione

Honestly, I'm a little ashamed to live so close to such a place and until a month ago, not even knowing it existed. Many times, we are so drawn to what is beyond our reach that we forget to look around and admire the things close to us. The Rocchetta is a real architectural jewel and if you happen to pass through this wonderful area of the Bel Paese , you absolutely must stop and visit it.
