(Robert A. Heinlein)
As parents, we are always eager to fulfill our role to the best of our ability. And, although there is no instruction manual to follow for raising our children, we want to do it right and we try with all our love for their psychological and emotional well-being. But, occasionally, we overdo it in terms of protecting them and end up being overprotective parents and, many times, unwittingly emasculators. Parents who do not allow children to develop within what is appropriate for their ages, to grow from their own experiences, and to reach, little by little, the necessary autonomy to achieve goals on their own.
It is not that we should leave them helpless or unprotected, but I do believe that we should trust their free will so that they feel free to act and take actions, based on the teachings, values, and principles that we have instilled in them. We should not fence them in so that nothing happens to them, to protect them from a world that sooner or later they will face, but rather we should guide them and train them so that they can defend themselves outside the home environment where we lovingly welcome them.
Parenting should always be focused on providing our children with the necessary tools for their development as unique human beings and for them to know how to coexist in the society to which they belong. There are still overprotective or castrating parents, parents who do not let their children learn to fly their own flight from a young age and go after them by making life easier for them. I do not know if it is because of fear, conformism, or comfort that they do not teach them to discover their wings, to recognize their strengths, and to embark on their own path with all that this implies. As parents, and even if it hurts us, we have to let them fall and get up, we have to teach them that in the journey of life they can win or lose. It is important to teach them to accept and understand frustrations and that failure is not the end of the world, but a learning experience for life.
I always make the analogy with nature because there is a lot of wisdom in it. We see how in the animal world when birds see that their young are beginning to rise, they encourage them to fly and go out to feed and become independent from the nest and enjoy their flight. That is what we must practice, love, and care for our children and that love must be translated into preparing them to live their own lives. Protecting them too much does not guarantee that they will always be well or that they will be happy if we keep them under our wings. Therefore, we must reflect on what is expressed in the phrase with which I begin my publication "Don't harm your children's lives by making it easier for them ".
