The place where the world stopped was not so strange, but the vertigo was overwhelming. The girl could not decide whether or not it would be wise to jump.

In that blissful ignorance, an unrelated thought entered her consciousness: why was there vertigo if she couldn’t see the bottom? The fog was so thick that she barely found the ladder leading to the roof of the tower. She was so determined to see this through. Now that she was about to do it - she doubted everything.

Wake me up, before you go-go, don't leave me hanging on like a yo-yo. Wake -

Stephanie’s ringtone cut through the silent night like a hot knife through butter. It was Jill. Stephanie sighed, stepping off the ledge. Tears came streaming down her face as she dropped to her knees. What was she thinking? She couldn’t give up now. She breathed. In and out. In and out. Calm. Trembling, she stood up.

Wake me up, before -

“Hello?”

“Oh my god, thank god you picked up. Are you alright? Where are you?” Jill’s voice was frantic.

“I’m alright,” Stephanie said.

“You don’t sound alright, where are you?”

“Home, I -”

“Don’t you lie to me you little bitch, I just talked with your dad and he says you went out hours ago.” Jill sounded mad. “Don’t do anything stupid, girl! Please!”

Stephanie gulped down her anxiety. Jill knew. Of course, she knew. “I’m at Lincoln Park,” Stephanie cried. “Come get me, please.”

Stephanie found her way down through the thick fog. This tower really was quiet at night. When she was little, Stephanie would sit up here with her mother. “This is where the world stops,” mom would say, eyes closed. Stephanie found it as fitting of a place as any to… to…

Jill pulled over with a skid, nearly hitting her car in a nearby tree. She ran out, hugging Stephanie with all her might.

“I’m so happy you picked up,” Jill said, teary-eyed.

“Me too.” Stephanie hugged her back. “What am I going to do, Jill?” Stephanie was now crying in her friend’s arms. “I’m so lonely. So sad.”

Jilled pulled away to look at her friend, one set of watery eyes to another. “You are the strongest person I know. Do you hear me? The strongest! This is nothing for you.” She wiped her eyes. “Come on, let’s get some hot chocolate.

That sounded great. Stephanie nodded and entered Jill’s car, leaving the place where the world stopped behind.
