This post is a response to the question "In what ways does the government regulate our everyday lives?" posed by @joshweertman.
One obvious way that the government regulates our daily lives is through minimum wage. Minimum wage rates are different for every state based on their own government and the cost of living. Even though this is currently a regulation instituted by state governments, the national government is trying to intervene. President Biden made an initiative after being elected that required a minimum $15 an hour to be paid by contractors to their employees. This government regulation faced some backlash when seven states sued the Biden administration, including Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arizona. (Buble) This is an example of instances where government regulation can get to a point where some can feel like they are suffocated. Regulation is not all filled with corruption, however. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates food, medication, vaccines, and other items for public health every day. Not only do they make sure the product is good for the public before it is on the market, but they make sure the product meets the standards after the product is on the market. Additionally, the FDA has a surveillance safety program where it constantly monitors its products, and "offers consumers education" by providing information to its consumers whenever information is demanded. (Christina) There are also regulations for construction workers that ensure the safety of the workers themselves and the citizens around them. As with most government involved affairs, there has been some question of corruption in government regulation, specifically because of the ability for the government to someone be bribed to tweak these regulations for certain companies. A good example of this would be with big tech companies because of the major power that they have gained over the years. In conclusion, government regulation in our daily lives is implemented to benefit us, but always has the opportunity to be corrupted and taken advantage of.
