Borderlands, this famous series of shooter games is known for combining elements of the role-playing and first-person shooter genres. Developed by Gearbox Software, Borderlands, saw the light in 2009 and this would be the first video game of a fairly recognized saga. My story with Borderlands begins in 2018, I knew it existed and I played it for the first time cooperatively with a friend, last year I played its sequel; which I will not talk about. This time I will focus on the first game and why I didn't like it.
"It’s not so bad…" is a section that I will bring every week or so, in which I will talk a little bit about the game, not at the level of a review, but the main topic would be my dislike of the game and why I think it is not as good as people paint it. I will almost always talk about games that I got a lot of hype for when I saw them but when I played them I was disappointed.
First of all let's see what is the story that Borderlands offers us, the story of the first game begins 200 years after the discovery of the Chamber, a kind of dimensional prison, many bounty hunters, including us as a player, are transported to Pandora. Upon arrival, a woman known as "the Guardian Angel" guides us and gives us instructions on what we must do to find the Chamber.
After a bunch of adventures our protagonists go through, regardless of which one you choose, the final confrontation arrives. A monster called the "Destroyer" emerges from the Chamber and we have to defeat it, then the monster is sealed back in the Chamber for another 200 years.
The story may not be bad, in fact, it has something that makes it interesting but I would only say it is that. Since I started the game I knew that it didn't take itself seriously, I say this because of the "comedy" with which they carry things; and if the game style is like that it's fine, it doesn't always have to be a super serious story to take it into account, what I mean is that the humor that the game handles wasn't funny to me. Leaving my taste aside, I still find the way they told the story heavy and slow.
Another very important point, if not the most important, is that the missions can be summarized in a simple thing, errand missions; in the purest GTA style Borderlands missions happened, there was always a mission of "Go to this place and get such and such", sometimes they varied and I liked that but when I realized I was in one of those missions the desire to close the game was immense.
I can't deny that the world has a good aesthetic, it's a bit cowboy but spacey which feels good with the air that the game wants to transmit, but that's the only positive thing I can say about the world. I don't know if I would consider it a world, since it is divided into very large areas where the story unfolds and at the end of the day I didn't feel like it was a real open world. The world is dead, I'm not just saying that because I focused on doing the main story and little else, I'm saying that because the only thing you can do is shoot (after all it is a shooter); apart from the main and side missions that send you from one place to another all the time you don't feel like there is really anything the world can offer you. The fun I found were the enemy bases that were all over the map, and not so fun because I had already been through those places doing the main missions.
Borderlands is not all bad, you can play it cooperatively as was my case and thus not get bored so much, the story may not be bad but the way they executed it and the design of missions end up boring me as a player. I wasn't expecting a complex story with which you have to go through the game more than once to understand, but truth be told, I was expecting something a little more interesting than that. The game mechanics I can't deny are fine and as a co-op shooter it works pretty well. I know that many people like Borderlands but this is not my case and this is a little bit my opinion about what I think about this game.
