Castlevania is a Netflix original series that I had a lot to see when its first season was released, unfortunately for me, it had only four episodes so I better decided to wait for the series to end to be able to see it. In this 2021 with the premiere of its fourth and final season I was forced to see it, since its setting and story caught my attention. I speak from the perspective of one more viewer, I have not played almost any video game in the saga, only the "reinvention" of the saga and those for me do not count within the original canon of the Castlevania universe. Here is my review of the first two seasons of Castlevania.
As I had already told you, the first season consists of four episodes which serve perfectly as an introduction and so that you want more of the series. The bomb that activates the plot of this series is the death of Dracula's wife, who in the first minutes of the series is burned at the hands of the church for alleged witchcraft when she was only a healer who helped people. When Dracula finds out about this, he puts together a plan of revenge for humanity for the death of his wife, from this premise the series starts.
Dracula is the main villain of the story but in this first season, to my surprise, he is relegated to the background. I would have liked to see more about the character but unfortunately he is a little out of the equation in the first season, the villain who takes the leading role is the church; and it is that it is the first season we see how they are the cause of all the massacre that Dracula unleashes in Wallachia and I do not answer that they continue to manipulate people to blame other factions for what is happening and, obviously, take control of the cities that are still standing.
In the other episodes we focus on the heroes of the story, who are: Trevor Belmont, Sypha Belnades and Dracula's own son, Alucard. Each one has an introduction well written enough to let us know who they are, where they come from, and the goal they have in common, which is to assassinate Dracula and stop the massacre that started.
The animation in this series is one of the best I have seen, of course there are moments in which I notice a little strange the drawing of some characters but nothing so relevant but in particular I want to highlight the animation of the first episode and the fight between Alucard and Trevor. The first episode, obviously, has as much detail as possible and it shows that they put a lot of effort when drawing it and the fight of Alucard and Trevor leaves us a taste of the quality of the animation that awaits us in the following seasons. The music was present and in many moments it accompanies excellently with the situations that we have on screen but where the soundtrack really has to shine it does not, in the fights I noticed that the music did not have an adequate level, almost always in those times it was a bit low and unfortunately goes unnoticed at those times.
We continue with the second season, in which the characters develop a little more and we have other appearances of characters that will enrich the plot. We follow the alliance of Trevor, Sypha and Alucard who go in search of the Belmont lair and to find a way to stop Dracula. Again this trio gets all the attention by having the best action scenes and the best moments on screen; Especially when they enter the Belmont family vault, which in my opinion was one of the best things he could have this season.
At last we have more presence on the part of Dracula, letting us see more than Dracula with a thirst for revenge, I would say that he is a Dracula tired of humanity and ready to exterminate it. On the other hand we have new characters that are important to the plot such as: Héctor and Isaac, who are the only two humans in Dracula's army and who are master forgers under Dracula's orders; there are also the commanders of Dracula's army. Another character that has a leading role is Carmilla, a vampire who conspires against Dracula to take away his castle since she sees him as an old man fulfilling his whim. I think Carmilla's character works very well because you get to feel a certain rejection when she appears on the scene and from the beginning, in one way or another, you know that she is going to get away with it.
And the most anticipated moment of the series, up to this point, the final showdown of Dracula vs Trevor, Sypha and Alucard. Poorly the moment that I most expected of the season and I can tell you that it was great, the arrival of the three heroes to the castle and fighting against all the vampires that were there before arriving at Dracula was great, an audiovisual marvel. The animation maintains its level throughout the season and sometimes improving, an example of this is Sypha's confrontation against the creatures of the night in chapter 2 and the fight in particular that Alucard has with his father.
Conclution
Castlevania is undoubtedly a good series with excellent animation, good actors who bring the characters to life and an incredible story, which although it takes its foundations from the third game in the saga is capable of creating a compelling story that works by itself. This series manages to position itself as one of my favorites in terms of animation and history, if you like this type of genre, you cannot miss the opportunity to see it.
