One of the places I feel holds high spiritual value is Sule Pagoda. Wait, let me share something that was a valuable experience. I know it's not easy to get through immigration to enter this country, especially since there was a sensational news story at the end of last year about illegal workers being held captive at the borders of Myanmar, Cambodia, and Thailand.
It's not easy to get in, so I don't think many people make it. I noticed several people on the plane yesterday. I saw five people who appeared to hold Indonesian passports. They were all between 40 and 50 years old. I just curious about why they were going to Myanmar.
To my surprise, we met again at Sule Pagoda. At that time, I was only visit because it was a must see, especially because Sule Pagoda is believed to be a pagoda that holds a spiritual connection to Siddhartha Gautama. Seeing these five people in this pagoda, I was certain they were indeed here for spiritual purposes. It truly requires a tremendous effort to pray and connect with Buddha.
But, I didn't just see the people I met yesterday at the airport, i also see the famous Sule Pagoda. It's like a religious heritage for Buddhists.
The purpose of going to Sule Pagoda was to see what this pagoda looks like and its history, but it turned out to be more than I imagined. This is the destination pagoda for the Buddhist community in Yangon, and not just Yangon. Furthermore, the striking architecture and ambiance make this place very sacred and serene.
There are so many Buddha statues, several stupas, and essential items for prayer—it's truly a lot. Even from a layperson's perspective like me, this place is a place to escape from the world. People around here aren't just praying; some are also seeking inner peace, even if they just sit and look around.
It's quite a busy place in the morning. Even I arrive at 7.00 a.m., it already packed. Of course, before enter the gate, I ask to pay an entry fee of 25,000 kyats and sign in the visitor book. I only see my name and five other people from Indonesia, and I felt so proud.
Here, I can see the activities of the local residents and really connect with them. They are very kind and polite, guide us around despite our language barrier. It's a shame the guard and volunteers don't speak English, but that's okay cause they also very kind, and we just use body language to communicate with each other.
