unemployment in the country has contributed largely to the worsening problem of poverty among the populace. Unemployment to leads to frustration and disillusionment which may result in crime or drug abuse in a futile attempt to escape from and forget the pains and humiliation of poverty and lack.
The problem of unemployment, he further stated, has worsened as millions of school leavers and graduates of tertiary institutions have not secured gainful employment over the years. Unemployment has posed a serious problem not only to the welfare of individuals but also to that of their families.
Nigeria unemployment rate rose for the seventh straight quarter to 13.9 percent in the third quarter of 2016 from 13.3 percent in previous period. It was the highest level since 2009, as the number of unemployment rose at a much slower 0.6 percent to 69.5 million as the labour force increased 1 percent to 80.7 million. Meanwhile, youth unemployment rate increased to 25 percent from 24 percent in the previous period. A year earlier, the unemployment rate was recorded at 9.9 percent. Unemployment rate in Nigeria averaged 9.52 percent, 4 million in 2006 until 2016, reaching an all time high of 19.70 percent in the fourth quarter of 2009 and a record low of 5.10 percent in the fourth quarter of 2010. The industrial and service sectors in Nigeria desperately need skilled labourers who have completed basic vocational training, such as carpenters, plumber, welders, bricklayers, mechanics, machinists, electricians, and nurses. Why? Emphasis has been put on higher education, it is absurd to turn an entire generation into doctors, engineers, bankers, and masters of art sciences. It is high time our government should invest more in vocational training in order to produce graduate who are not relying solidly on white collar jobs that are not available. Vocational training should be highly valued.
Vocational and technical education is an umbrella which covers so many units. They are the agricultural education unit, business education unit which is also an umbrella to secretarial or office education, accounting education, computer education, distributive/marketing education.
