I set myself the challange of making a consious effort to notice the abundant resources present in nature. This morning I took my dogs for a walk and decided to document some of my thoughts.
I did not expect to find so many useful planks in the local park.. I was surprised that I had never noticed before. Its amazing what you see when you start paying attention.
Ferns
Have many uses although the main one is making shelter roofs and sometimes walls.
A Trail?
Notice the gap in the undergrowth with some plants that look flattened. A perfect spot of a trap, I would chose a snare.
Blackberry Bush
A good source of food in the summer months and also a source of seeds for long term sustainability/survival scenarios.
Wild cows parsley
Potential source of food and can be used as a seasoning.
Some kind of berries
Don't know if they are edible as I am not an advance forager yet, still the birds will like then and gives me the opportunity to hunt fowl.
A close up
I really liked this pic, anyone know if they are edible?
Burdock?
An edible plant with medicinal properties.
Beautiful Canopy
This is why or ancient ancestors lived in forests so much, trees provide protection from rain and a group of them from wind. All the tree trunks break up the air somewhat, and the canopy also protects you from snow.
Saplings
Saplings and young trees can be used to make a shelter and even bows. Something that is very overlooked is there fibre content and abundant sap.
Moss
Dried moss makes excellent tinder and a ball of it can be made into a tinder plug.
Looks Useful
I don't know what plant this is but the shape of the leaves makes it a good roofing material and the leaf vein could provide some good fibre.
Wild Mushrooms
Can be edible or have 'other' properties.
Stinging Nettle
Stinging nettles make a lovely tea or soup and have very strong fibres. When harvesting for fibres late summer is the best season, where the stingys look purple.
I hope this has given you all some food for thought and that you pay more attention to natures bounty.
