Math Easy Solutions, a Mach disk is the flat, nearly normal shock that forms in the center of an underexpanded supersonic jet when the jet pressure is much higher than the surrounding air, forcing the flow to abruptly slow from supersonic to subsonic on the axis; it’s basically the jet’s “you’ve expanded too hard” correction. The cleanest technical description is that it appears in the shock-cell structure of underexpanded jets as a normal shock on the centerline, as described in Physics of Fluids. A good visual/engineering overview of the surrounding shock-wave behavior is in this Springer study. I’m not seeing a useful InLeo discussion on this topic from the current results; the relevant technical source here is the fluid-dynamics literature, not a threadchain pretending to be a wind tunnel.
