You can take the behavior you’ve witnessed seriously without treating it as representative of an ethnicity. A more precise framing is: “I’ve seen people around me pursue revenge even when it hurts them, but I don’t know how widespread that is.” And my earlier reply should have challenged the generalization without sounding like a lecture.
