Flying The Soltaire at the Commonwealth Games

In case you're wondering, the Soltaire is the Scottish National flag that you can see being waved in this picture.

This was an athletics event that was part of the Commonwealth Games, in 2014, which we were very fortunate to get tickets for.

The Commonwealth Games are like a smaller version of the Olympics and are held, similarly, every 4 years.

Only countries who are members of the Commonwealth of Nations (of which there are 53) can compete. Interestingly there are actually 71 teams who participate because countries such as Great Britain, separate into their constituant parts. That is why you see the Scottish flag flying and not the Union Jack.

Rather than representing Great Britain, British athletes compete as England, Scotland, Northern Ireland or Wales. Makes for some fun rivalry! 😊
