C H A P T E R | 3
I looked out into the lifeless room. I stood there for a moment. My throat tightened. “Thomas?” I whispered. The house remained silent. The wind crept into the open door behind me, blowing leaves across the floor. I fell deep into my sorrows and loneliness, and just stood there, letting the tears fall. I couldn’t believe he was gone again.
“Hi there,” said a voice behind me. I turned around swiftly. A young man stood in the doorway. His blonde hair swayed in the wind.
I turned away quickly and wiped my tears away with my sleeve. I took a deep breath and turned around to look at him. The young man smiled at me.
“Are you ok?” He asked warmly. His cool blue eyes looked at me with caring.
I burst into tears. I hated him for asking that question - I was trying so hard to hold it together, but I could tell his concern was genuine.
“I’m sorry, um… would you like me to leave?” He asked.
“No.” I choked out. “Your fine.” I wiped the tears from my eyes once more and looked at him. He was about my age.
“I’m James. I was out delivering papers but noticed you were upset and wanted to see if I could help.”
I looked at him confused. Our paper was always delivered early in the morning. “It is almost 1:00. Why are you delivering papers this late?”
James looked at me shyly. “I was running a little late. Just don’t tell my boss, ok?” He smiled.
I laughed and welcomed him in. He seemed very caring and so nice, and I really needed someone to talk to. Nadine was on vacation, and she was the only one in my life that knew about Thomas. So, a perfect stranger seemed like the best person to talk to – if they didn’t believe me, or if they thought I was crazy, I wouldn’t care.
“Do you really want to know what’s wrong?” I asked.
“Yes,” he said calmly. He looked over at the dining room and gestured for me to join him at the table.
James sat across from me in Thomas’s old seat. I prepared myself for telling him the story of Thomas. I looked at him, took in a deep breath, and began.
