Now...here is a story, even if I am joining this cnversation a lot later than you imagined.

I was offered (at a wedding in Greece) a job in Venezuela. When I arrived there, I was told the man had not returned yet, but he will be back in a few weeks. A month later we (my bro and I) were running out of cash. A greek taverna where we usually ate, the owner offered that if we can have a few games of tavli (backgammon) with him whenever he has time, we can eat for free.

We left 3 months later. On the night we flew away, an aeroplance crashed - into his taverna, killing him!

We went to LA and then Frisco.

What money we had ..well we got robbed. As we walked, trying to think of how we can survive, I saw in the window of a heart specialist a sign saying he is also the consul for Greece.

I went in and started off by telling him I have a British passport. He said he does not care - since I can talk to him in Greek, as far as he is concerned, I am Greek.

He helped with cash for a room and food and organised a party - he provided at his cost all food and drinks and asked each guest to donate $20.

It was hopefully meant to be enough for us to fly to Australia.

Not ONE guest arrived.

He got into a rage and collecting us the next morning took us to his bank and asked them to lend us $3,500 (remember, this happened when I was in my twenties, and now I am in my late seventies, so that was real money then). He guaranteed the bank and asked that we pay it back to his cousin who lives in Australia.

His cousin met us at the airport, took us to his home and looked after us until we could get jobs and rent a room.

We paid the debt off within six months...but I still consider myself in debt to both cousins, for they taught me something beautiful about the human heart.
