Another way of seeing it is by identifying empathy as what is needed for creating forms -hearts-souls alien to ours (in the sense that we are all aliens to each other, and often, to ourselves).

The down side to empathy is that it is a double-edged sword, used by each of us more often to cut ourselves, because we cannot bear to cut another.
