Thank you John, I read it - with quite some interest.
One of my failings, when I talk and when I write, is that I give details. I think of them as giving substance to the events or people I am describing. I always feel bad about it, for I feel the listener-reader, is not going to be interested and is impatient for me to get to the point.
In this story, I liked the detail (for instance, the rusty bicycle pump)and yet, I liked the way he controls his writing, keeping it from rambling, each point a bend in the road that leads to the ending...which is not really an ending, for he left me wondering what he said to the girl, the next day.
Being old enough to remember a different age, when our values were different, I appreciate how he made that time become real in small descriptions which built up the picture for us to sense it. I like when an author can do so without having to 'tell' us.
