The struggle is real - Zoom Envy. Our cats squabble and compete for quality attention and desk time when I'm in an online meeting. The rest of the day, when I'm quietly working at my desk and NOT trying to impress my Thai business colleagues? 🤣 They're bored and rolling about in the sunshine outside or chasing rainy season frogs and baby snakes. Sigh
They KNOW when it's the big early morning Zoom meeting time because I'm at my desk by 6am, ready to log in at 6.30am.
And then it starts. Usually it's Mr Gin who's the biggest problem. Short for Mr GingerSnap. But he squirms uncomfortably at that name now that he's no longer a kitten. The other two cats come and go and have their 5 mins on the other large, empty side of the desk, but Mr Gin is my Jealous Boy, and my eternal Zoom Buddy.
Whole BIG desk empty and clear for me?? No problem - I'll just lay on here notes that she prepared so she fumbles for words and makes herself look silly.
I quite fancy trying my hand at this typing thing. I wonder what happens if I bang on the keys while she's trying to understand that flow chart?? 😆
Really? You're STILL ignoring me after that last move??
It's really HARD to ignore him, but I do. Have taken to being able to slide my notes out from under him... and he ALWYAS lays on exactly the paper I need. He can SMELL where my focus needs to be, and when it's not on him he No Likey!!
Eventually he manages short naps - usually in the second hour....
But in between it's an up-down affair...
I have to sit VERY STILL cos the slightest head movements trigger interest in the ear phones as a new toy, and we've had rather more biting events (and ear phone replacements) than I care to think about.
Biggest challenge? Keeping his butt out of the screen view. 😆
6.30am till 9am is a LONG meeting and he gets quite grumpy through it. Parades up and down across my desk, rubs his head on the edge of the screen to claim ownership and seems to try to make his point: "Life is about cuddles and tummy rubs and purring, and NOT about screen time with people you barely know, makeup and a blazer on the top half, with PJ pants and bare feet below." I think he's not wrong, but we'll live exclusively by his version of Life when he also pays the bills.
The upside of Mr Gin as my Zoom Buddy is he keeps it all very interesting - no nod-offs or lapses of focus on my part, cos it's a full time job managing him and his little jealous behavior routines.
Meeting done, fresh coffee made and now I'M READY for a sweet kitty cuddle. Him? No thanks. He looks bored as he saunters off to the empty bedroom to nap on the windowsill quietly, all-peopled out.
This work from home thing is exhausting, he said.
