Luke's story
It was a cold and rainy night in the city. Lucas, a young digital illustrator, was working on his latest assignment: a poster for a science fiction movie. He had to deliver it the next day, but he was not satisfied with the result. It was missing something, a touch of originality, of magic.
Lucas decided to take a break and go for a walk through the streets. While he was walking, he noticed the store windows, the illuminated signs, the graffiti, the people... Everything inspired him, everything suggested ideas to him. He took his graphics tablet out of his backpack and began to draw what he saw, mixing reality with his imagination.
Thus, he created a digital illustration that combined futuristic elements with other more everyday ones, such as flying cars, robots, buildings, umbrellas, cats... It was a unique work, which reflected his personal vision of the world. Lucas felt that he had found what he was looking for. He returned to his studio, finished the poster and sent it to the client. The next day, he received a call. It was the director of the film, who congratulated him on his work and invited him to the premiere. Lucas couldn't believe it. He had fulfilled his dream of being a recognized digital illustrator.
A good digital illustrator needs to have several skills, both artistic and technical, to create images that communicate, accompany or enhance a message. Some of these skills are:
Drawing
Drawing: It is the basis of digital illustration, since it allows the ideas and concepts that you want to be conveyed to be captured in images. A digital illustrator must master different drawing techniques, as well as concepts of composition, proportions, aesthetics and visual identity.
Creativity
Creativity: It is the ability to generate original and innovative solutions to problems or challenges that arise in the field of digital illustration. A digital illustrator must have a creative imagination that allows them to explore different styles, mediums and formats to express their personal vision of the world.
Search and research: It is the ability to collect relevant information about a topic, a trend, an audience or a client to develop a digital illustration appropriate to the context and objective. A digital illustrator must have an interest in current affairs and general culture, as well as know how to use reliable and varied sources.
Graphic design
Graphic design and typography: These are the knowledge that allows you to create digital illustrations that are integrated with other visual elements, such as texts, logos, icons, etc. A digital illustrator must know how to apply graphic design principles, such as contrast, balance, hierarchy, color, etc., as well as choose and combine fonts that harmonize with the image.
