I learnt quite a lot from this piece, but before that, let’s dive into facts about the Magic Dogwood plant! No two magic dogwood flowers are the same, the white bracts of the flower are fused together at the ends which in turn forms a cage like shape. The plant is also rare, and it’s native to Mexico. It’s such a unique plant! The regular dogwood flower isn’t fused together at the ends . The plant is symbol of fertility, loyalty, determination and safety. It’s also believed to have a calming effect on one’s aura, hence it’s used in aromatherapy. Super happy to know about the magic dogwood, it’s just so unique!
I made use of Creatacolor pencils, Van Gogh watercolor and my Sinoart sketchbook
At first, I did a quick sketch of the flower in order to understand the forms, because the angle of the reference was somewhat complicated and I liked the challenge. The fact that the flower was also white, hence some parts might tend to blend into one another which in turn makes you mistake it for a whole shape, made it a bit confusing.
I was too sure how to draw my character, but I did it anyways. At that point after shading, I felt it was finished, but it just felt very bland. I contemplated between using the water soluble pencils and watercolor, but I went with watercolor. The moment I added the sap green to her eyes, I knew the piece was coming together. Then I continued! Super happy I didn’t leave it as just a sketch; )
