Cats have pawed their way into my heart, and after my first failed attempt at painting a fox, I decided to paint the cats that a photographed a few weeks ago. I couldn’t be more pleased with the results. I think this is the first time that I’ve painted an animal, asides birds, and I actually like the painting ; )
It got me thinking, could it be because I was upclose and personal with the animal, or because I like them? I chose to paint a fox at first without a sketch, and oh my, it was a disaster (wasn’t too terrible, but it wasn’t too nice either)
I didn’t get discouraged, it led me to remember the two cats I met at school. I chose to paint the eyes of the stripped one, and focused on painting the head of the black one at different angles. On Instagram, there’s a particular artist I follow who paints cats in watercolor a lot, and I get fascinated each time, there’s this gentleness about her paints a whole.
I decided to take my time and not rush the painting. I sketched slowly and laid my lines purposely, then I went on to paint the eyes I drew first.
I made use of neon yellow and sap green a lot. Funny enough, whilst painting the first head, I realized that, if I’d just used the very dark blue I used for the fur, for the eyes, it automatically turns green when it comes in contact with the neon yellow. I didn’t think it’d work at first cause it was too dark, glad I know now tho ; )
This was one of the most insightful paintings I’ve done in a while, hoping you learn a thing or two from it too ; )
