Here I’ll be showing you a step by step process of how I created this repeat pattern! The assignment was to take a picture of a flower, study it, and then come up with ideas for the motif one is to use for the pattern! Below is a picture I took of the plant
I made use of Reeves gouache paint, Winsor & Newton brushes & sketchbook, A2 paper, water tape, cretacolor pencils
The second step was to create sketches, which I did in my Winsor & Newton A4 sketch pad. I drew 4 different motif ideas. I went with the third one, which was more of an abstract interpretation of how I saw the plant.
The next step was trying to figure out what colors to use for the motif. I wanted something warm but also cool. So I painted out 3 color ways to figure out which would work better. It was a struggle trying to pick out the perfect shade of dark red ;)
I went with the first color way. The next step was transferring the drawing to a tracing paper. The design was going to be repeated on a full imperial paper/ A2 paper. It was super tedious if I’m to be honest. Once I was able to mirror the motif properly, I got painting. It took about 3 days ( breaks in between) to complete the painting process. It was really worth it in the end!
