Do you know what boiler rooms are? It is a dj set format where the audience participates as part of the show, something similar to what they do in the Tiny Desk. In this format have been presented great artists like Kaytranada, Charlie XCX and others, but a few weeks ago was the first boiler room in Venezuela and presented Dj Yirvin, Arca and Dj Baba. An unprecedented show that I have to talk about because it is the history of Venezuelan culture, and I love history, culture and Venezuela.
This is amazing, not only because the three dj sets were a spectacular experience, but because as I said before, it's history, but why exactly is it history? Well, Arca, a transgender producer who has worked with artists like Kanye, Rosalia and Bjork, gave her first concert in her home country the same day this boiler room was made, and it's amazing yes, because she is the most known among these characters, but there is something interesting with Dj Baba and Dj Yirvin inside the music that make you appreciate more the fact of living what was lived that night in Caracas.
Back in the 90s, Venezuela created a musical genre that was way ahead of the Venezuelan mentality at the time: raptor house. Changa Tuki (or raptor house, as it can also be called) was a genre that combined electronica with a bit of phunk and techno in the most danceable way possible, making in the neighborhoods of Caracas minitecas and djset wars that made all the neighborhoods of the capital dance in the most "marginal" way possible. Something that within the country was extravagant and vulgar, in Europe became the muse for many artists who found in the raptor house the innovation of electronic music.
And among all those artists that came out of this genre, the most important were Dj Baba and Dj Yirvin, with songs like Caracas de Noche, Petare and Pan con Mortadela. These characters were the inspiration for Arca and several under artists here in Venezuela, since the raptor transcended beyond music, it became a subculture in Venezuela that linked graffiti, clothes, dance, music and lifestyle in a healthy way.
Due to what has happened in the country, all these artists had to leave, but as a good thing we can say that now there are festivals around the world where you can listen to raptor house. Something good, and as a commemoration, Boiler Room together with Cusica was responsible for uniting these exponents in one night of madness, music and dance giving one of the best parties that Venezuela has had in recent times, being not only a tribute to the history of the country's music, but also a door for future projects that have to do with the changa tuki, giving it the visibility it deserves by the networks and everywhere in the world.
¿Saben lo que son los boiler rooms? Es un formato de dj set dónde el público participa como parte del show, algo parecido a lo que hacen en los Tiny Desk. En este formato se han presentado grandes artistas de la talla de Kaytranada, Charlie XCX y demás, pero hace unas semanas se hizo el primer boiler room en Venezuela y se presentaron Dj Yirvin, Arca y Dj Baba. Un espectáculo sin precedentes del que tengo que hablar porque es historia de la cultura venezolana, y yo amo la historia, la cultura y Venezuela.
Esto es asombroso, no solo porque los tres dj set fueron una experiencia espectacular, sino porque como dije antes, es historia, pero, ¿por qué es exactamente historia? Bueno, Arca, productora transgenero que ha trabajado con artistas como Kanye, Rosalia y Bjork, dio su primer concierto en su país de origen el mismo día que se hizo este boiler room, y es increíble si, porque es la más conocida entre estos personajes, pero hay algo interesante con Dj Baba y Dj Yirvin dentro de la música que hacen apreciar más el hecho de vivir lo que se vivió esa noche en Caracas.
Por allá en los 90s, Venezuela creó un género musical que estaba muy adelantado a la mentalidad venezolana en esa época: el raptor house. La Changa Tuki (o raptor house, cómo también se le puede llamar) fue un género que combinaba la electrónica con un poco de phunk y tecno de la forma más bailable posible, haciéndose en los barrios de Caracas guerras de minitecas y de djset que hacían bailar a todos los barrios de la capital de la forma más “marginal” posible. Algo que dentro del país era extravagante y vulgar, en europa se convirtió en musa para muchos artistas que encontraron en el raptor house la innovación de la música electrónica.
Y entre todos esos artistas que salieron de este genero, los más importantes fueron Dj Baba y Dj Yirvin, con canciones como Caracas de Noche, Petare y Pan con Mortadela. Estos personajes fueron la inspiración para Arca y varios artistas under aquí en Venezuela, ya que el raptor trascendió más allá de la música, se volvió una subcultura en Venezuela que ligaba el grafiti, la ropa, el baile, la música y el estilo de vida de una forma sana.
Debido a lo que ha pasado en el país, todos estos artistas se tuvieron que ir, pero como algo bueno se puede decir que ahora hay festivales alrededor del mundo dónde se escucha raptor house. Algo bueno, y como conmemoración, Boiler Room junto a Cusica se encargó de unir a estos exponentes en una sola noche de locura, música y baile dando una de las mejores fiestas que ha tenido Venezuela en los últimos tiempos, siendo no solo un homenaje a la historia de la música del país, sino también una puerta para próximos proyectos que tengan que ver con la changa tuki, dándole la visibilidad que se merece por las redes y todas partes del mundo.
