Hello, my dear travelers from the @worldmappin community! 🌍
✨ Today is a special day because we managed to reach the largest dam on the island 🏝️ where I live.
It wasn’t just another outing: it was an opportunity to get closer to a structure that we normally see from afar and to understand how it works from the inside.
Have you ever entered a spillway? 🤔 Well, today we’ll do it so you can see what it’s like. A spillway is not just a simple channel: it is a structure designed to release excess water when the reservoir rises more than expected. Thanks to it, the dam is protected, an uncontrolled overflow is avoided, and the risk for communities downstream is reduced.
It is, in a way, a giant safety valve that works silently.
Walking through it is impressive: its size, the sound of the water, the force with which it moves, and the engineering behind it. But it also reminds us of something important: these places are not just attractive for photos, they are critical infrastructure. That is why they must be visited with respect, with authorization, and with all safety measures. It is not about showing off by entering anywhere, but about learning and valuing what makes it possible to manage water safely.
This experience also makes me think about responsible tourism: we can discover incredible places without putting our lives or the environment at risk. The island has beautiful landscapes, but also stories of effort, engineering, and community that deserve to be told responsibly.
So join me on this tour of the spillway of the largest dam on the island. I will show you what it is like, what it feels like, and why it is worth visiting with the eyes of a curious traveler, but also with awareness and care. 💧🏞️
This is where the water flows down during the rainy season when the dam overflows and runs toward a small river farther down below.
Many people like to come to this place to swim and enjoy the landscape and the tranquility of the area.
Plus, the natural views are very beautiful.
Many species of fishing birds frequent this place because of the abundance of food for them in these calm waters.
It is also known that crocodiles 🐊 have been seen on the banks, which is why swimming is not advisable, as it can be very dangerous.
Thank you very much for making it this far 🥰
