In jewelry, precious metals are usually gold, (Au), silver, (Ag), palladium, (Pd) platinum, (Pt), and rhodium, (Rh). One of the fundamental characteristics of a jewel is its durability and that is why the most noble materials known are used. Sometimes, noble metals do not have all the mechanical qualities that would be desirable for use in goldsmiths, jewelery or costume jewelery, so alloys are used.
