I live with my family in a rural area, or rather on the outskirts of a small town, I have land on which we grow vegetables for our family, and we also keep rabbits to eat dietary easily digestible meat.
In these parts, people don't really like rabbit meat. They prefer to buy pork in stores, grown in large pig farms. And I try to buy less meat in the store. The meat from the store does not have the real taste and aroma that comes from home-made meat.
Most likely, this is due to the food of the animals. We try to give a variety of feed to domestic animals, especially in the fall, and do not feed them with one compound feed.
When we raised piglets, the main food was potatoes, beets, rutabaga, and in the summer also various greens. This is what gives the taste of meat, and not feed with growth accelerators.
We also raised broilers, which also always received vegetable feed in the diet. Acquaintances and friends often asked to sell them homemade meat. But we had a small farm, just for home use.
But all that was left behind. Now I have only rabbits on my farm. Animals need constant care, they need time, and they tie you to the house.
All this, of course,is a big minus. You can't just leave home for a few days. You can't leave home with your whole family on a trip. In previous years, my wife and children and I could go to visit my father-in-law and mother-in-law for a week, we could just go fishing for the whole weekend. At that time, my mother helped us take care of the animals, she still had the strength to do this. Now she is 80 years old. We try not to leave her alone at home, and even more so to load her with animals. She helps us well in gardening and gardening matters. Here we gave her complete freedom.
But back to the rabbits. Lovers and connoisseurs of rabbits understand the taste of this meat and they periodically apply for the purchase of a rabbit. Young mothers or grandmothers also ask for rabbit meat for their children.
Currently, young children are diagnosed with early allergies when switching from breast milk to normal food. And then pediatricians recommend feeding children rabbit and turkey meat. This meat is not allergic. And yes, goat's milk. But this is a separate song.
Do I have any benefit from keeping rabbits? Many times I wanted to stop doing them, and my wife used to talk about it. But after thinking about it, we decide to deal with them further. There is another benefit from rabbits - this is manure for the garden-garden! And this is not a small benefit!
If we do not use manure in our garden, we will not be able to get a good crop of vegetables. Currently, very few people are engaged in raising animals on their home plots and farms. If someone sells manure, it costs a lot of money. And we are provided with our own natural fertilizer.
That is why we continue to keep rabbits, although the price of feed has increased significantly at the beginning of this year.
