Greetings, friends.
How does my Saturday morning start? Of course, it starts with the fact that I open my eyes. But that's not what I'm talking about. I don't have to go to the office that day, so I go to the backyard and feed the dog. And I decide that today we will have a harvest from our garden for breakfast.
The first thing I do is pick cucumbers.
In early spring, we plant cucumbers of the salad category - long and soft. At the end of May, we can already eat fresh cucumbers. But in June, we planted a second wave of cucumbers to harvest in the second half of August. These are small cucumbers, crispy for salting for the winter. Of course, it's nice to just eat them fresh too. We have already made several jars of pickles. In recent years, we have stopped salting cucumbers, but we need to have some in winter.
After picking the cucumbers, I decided to harvest the ripe tomatoes. I love picking tomatoes. At this moment, I always remember that in my native village, during my childhood, there were no red tomatoes in the shops. Green tomatoes were brought to us. People bought boxes of them, which is about 10 kg, put them in a warm place and waited for the tomatoes to turn red.
I grew up in a forest village. People were engaged in harvesting wood and did not grow tomatoes. Moreover, it was difficult and expensive to grow them.
More than 40 years have passed since then. Now I live 180 km to the west, the climate is getting milder, the winters are warmer, and there are many warm days in summer. Now our region is no longer called the "land of green tomatoes", as in previous years. Now I'm harvesting ripe, delicious red tomatoes in my greenhouse.
Scientists have developed many new varieties of tomatoes of early breeding. And not just tomatoes. During my childhood, I don't remember that there were shops where you could buy cucumber seeds or cucumbers. The seeds passed each other and kept their own. My wife and I like this variety of yellow tomatoes. The seeds were given to us by my mother-in-law, but they have now run out.
I also decided to take a couple of peppers and a zucchini for breakfast.
This year we had a problem with beans. For some reason, not a single bean plant sprang up in the spring. There were probably 2 factors: the mice could eat the seeds, and the emerging shoots could be pecked by blackbirds. I planted a second wave of beans and decided to try a variety with long spaghetti-like pods.
I put these "spaghetti" on the cutting board and forgot about them. My wife and I went to the store. When we got home, Mom said she wanted to throw away "the shoelaces that you left on the table." She doesn't eat green beans.
I took an eggplant to cook it for lunch. This is the first time we have planted such an unusual variety this year. It's delicious!
This year we have a problem not only with beans, but also with peas. Surprisingly, not a single plant appeared in the spring. At the end of June, I planted more peas and now it has appeared.
It's good in summer, especially in the second half of it. We can go to the garden and get breakfast for yourself there.
