In an otherwise exquisite area of Caracas is located a small and beautiful Rumanian catholic church San Constantine and Santa Elena that is unparalleled in the country. It is a structure built entirely of wood in Transylvania, a city in the northwestern center of Romania, and brought piece by piece in a single ship to Venezuela, together with a group of 8 native Romanian artisans who would take charge of its assembly in a year and a half, as if it were a puzzle.

We walked through the canopy of trees and crossed a wooden footbridge into the street leading to the center of the park - a most amazing Spanish Colonial complex with an array of the most ornate and intricate structures. These buildings, along with Balboa Park itself - were built in 1915 for the Panama-California Exposition that celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal. It showcased San Diego as the first port-of-call on the US west coast, thus putting this small town on the map!

The fact that they are the oldest buildings of the university makes them worthy of special appreciation on my part. Their walls hold stories and history; they are the silent witnesses to the founding of this university and its rapid growth. In addition, my great weakness with these buildings is the classic style they display in the design of their facades. I love those columns at their entrances. For me , they look very simple, very minimalist (as they would say today), but at the same time, they are truly imposing and majestic. So, join me to see the exterior facades of each of these buildings.
