Enchanted with your post I once had in my hands a writing about Flamel, he was a literate man for his time. He was a copyist and understood Latin well. According to legend, when he was in the middle of the Hundred Years' War working as a bookseller in Paris, Flamel got hold of an alchemical grimoire around 1355 - different versions claim he received it from a stranger, that he bought it almost at random or that it was given to him by an angel in a dream - that far exceeded his knowledge, and he spent 21 years trying to decipher it. I understand it is reviewed in Harry Poter's novel although I am not completely sure.
