The giants described in Genesis 6:4 were far from ordinary humans. The passage suggests that they came into existence through the union of the “sons of God” and the “daughters of men.” Because of this unusual and supernatural origin, they did not share a typical human nature. These beings were known for their strength, power, and remarkable reputation characteristics that go well beyond what we would expect from humans who simply grew tall due to natural conditions like hormonal disorders. Rather than being frail, these giants were distinguished by their might and influence.
Consider the passage in Genesis:
When the human population began to grow and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful and took them as wives. Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is flesh; his days will be 120 years.”
During that time and even afterward giants lived on the earth when the sons of God had relations with the daughters of men and children were born to them. These children became the mighty men of old, famous for their strength. And God saw that human wickedness was great on the earth, and that every intention of their hearts was continually evil.
This account indicates that the giants were the result of a divine human union. Many interpreters understand the “sons of God” to be angels. One reason for this view is God’s statement: “My Spirit shall not always strive with man, for he is flesh.” This distinction between spirit and flesh suggests that the sons of God were spiritual beings rather than human men.
In several parts of Scripture, angels are referred to as “sons of God,” which supports the idea that heavenly beings took human wives and produced these extraordinary offspring.
In summary, the giants of Genesis 6:4 were exceptional beings born from the union of angelic sons of God and human women. Their strength, reputation, and unique nature set them apart from the rest of humanity and highlight the unusual circumstances that led to their existence.
