Two months ago I wrote this post about starting my greenhouse. We had just pulled all the weeds and it was ready to receive plants! I wanted to update with a tour of my very green greenhouse!
When I went in to check on the greenhouse and pull some weeds, I was shocked to find Orange Kitty laying in the top of my turmeric plant! He just loved that spot and did not want me to pull weeds around him! You can also see the aloe vera are doing well in front of him.
I planted something like 20 pumpkin plants in there. I knew they would take over, and they definitely have! They are all over, but thankfully I think I've turned most of them so they grow up the sides instead of growing out into the middle and making it impossible to walk in there!
.
I also planted about 8 crook neck squash plants in there. I had previously had them around the property, but they seemed to get too wet. I think they really love the dry, warm climate in the greenhouse. Check out how many babies I have on just this one plant!
Someday soon I hope to have an overabundance of squash and pumpkin to eat! We may eat it every day for a month, but it will be free and from our own garden!
I also planted a lot of breadnuts. They have turned into some really nice looking plants. I hope that we can get them in the ground when they are a little bigger - perhaps in April when rainy season starts next year!
I also have some turmeric and ginger planted in some crates. They seem to be growing well (at least the plants). I need to figure out how long to let them grow before harvesting them!
Another thing I planted that we currently have a lot of is cacao plants! A friend got a cacao pod and didn't know what to do with it, so she put it in her compost. I knew I could get the seeds and planted them. They are loving the greenhouse. Not sure how they will do in the cooler, rainy weather we have here, but we're going to try it!
Next to the cacao, I have planted a few tomatoes. I have had them around the outside in the past, but I decided to put them in the middle this time to see how they would do! They are still tiny, so we're waiting to see. I have a few in containers as well.
In the raised bed I had, I decided to plant cauliflower, basil, and beans in the corners to grow up a pole. I think they are coming along! I already have some beans on the vines - not sure what variety they are!
I also planted quite a few papaya seeds and have some little papaya trees growing. I am hopeful that I can transplant them before they get too big. I'll have to find a good spot where they will be safe until they get bigger! I also have some cherry guavas near them that are also tiny!
Another thing I was trying out was potatoes in grow bags. I was experimenting with some being in the direct rain versus some being in the drier part of the greenhouse with direct watering. The ones in the direct rain are getting wilty and dying. The ones in the drier part seem to look really good. I don't have space to move the ones in direct rain into the drier part, so I'll just have to try again some other time!
I have enjoyed watching the ground of the greenhouse go from brown to covered in green! I have never been good at growing stuff, but I'm really trying this time to get some produce that we like to eat!
Thanks for stopping by for the greenhouse tour!
