Chapter Two
The next day as we drove up to the Avalon training camp, I noticed that lots of others were doing the same thing as us. We walked up to the counter with the sign that said, “ENLIST HERE.”
“Hello. We are two young men that want to fight for their country,” I said.
“Names,” The person behind the desk asked.
“Rudlin and Ector,” I said.
“Ages,” He asked.
“19 and 18,” I said.
“Just sign here,” He said.
Ector and I signed on the lines where he pointed.
“Welcome to the army of Avalon,” He said. “Your uniforms are in the changing room.”
“Thank you sir,” I said. Then we went to the changing room.
After we changed into our army uniforms we headed to the training area. There we started to practice fighting and learned how to use a gun. It is hard being in the army. We have to wake up at five a.m. to do a five mile run or to do three hundred jumping jacks. One day as we did our one hundred pushups, the general came and visited our camp. Everyone crowded around him.
“Tomorrow you will have your last day of training, and then you will go and fight Denaria!” The general announced. Everyone cheered.
We woke up and started our last day of training.
“I can’t wait until tomorrow to finally start fighting for our country,” I said to Ector.
“Yeah, me neither,” He said.
“Quit talking and get going!” An officer shouted.
“OK,” I said. And we started off on our run.
When we got back we started to do our sit ups. I like sit ups, but I think that the best part of training is probably sword fighting practice.
“Ector what is your favorite part of training?” I asked.
“Probably the parts were you have to read about what to do,” He said.
“That is the most boring part of the whole thing,” I said. “Why do you like to read so much?”
“Well it is good for you and it makes you smarter,” He explained. I don’t care if I don’t get really smart from reading; I think I’m smart enough.
The next day when I woke up, I was so glad that I was finally going to do something for my country. I got on my uniform and headed outside. The general was back and I just heard him say as I came out. “Plans have changed and you don’t have to come to war for some time still,” I ran back inside.
“Ector today we are not going to war…” I said sadly.
“Oh well I guess we have to wait a little longer,” He said. I was so disappointed.
The next day I decided to try to go and fight somewhere. Ector and I walked up to the main desk to ask for a mission for us.
“Hello,” I said. “Is there any mission that we can do?”
“Hmm… let me see,” he said, as he clicked on a computer. “Here is one both of you can do.”
“Great let’s do it!” I said enthusiastically.
“First I need you to sign here,” he said.
I was just about to sign when, “Wait!” Ector shouts, “What is the mission?”
“It is going through these mountains and getting to this camp. They will tell you what to do,” he said, pointing at his map.
“OK, sounds good,” I said.
“I guess,” Ector said. Then we both signed.
The next day we started off. We got in the jeep and started driving. About five hours later, the car broke down. “Come on!” I shouted angrily. I got out and opened the hood of the car. Smoke poured out. After the smoke cleared, I noticed that the piston chamber had exploded.
“Bad news,” I said, “The piston chamber exploded.”
Ector who was reading a book asked, “Is that a bad thing?”
“I just said it was!” I yelled.
“Can you fix it?” he asked.
“Of course not,” I said, “we have to get there walking.”
“Look over there. It’s another jeep,” Ector said. He was right! I ran over to it.
“It looks like it has been here a long time, judging by the dust,” I called to him.
“We better get going,” he said.
“Good idea,” I said.
