OldMapsOnline is developed out of a love of history and heritage of old maps. The project started as a collaboration between Klokan Technologies GmbH, Switzerland and The Great Britain Historical GIS Project based at the University of Portsmouth, UK thanks to funding from JISC. Since January 2013 is the project improved and maintained by volunteers and the team of Klokan Technologies GmbH in their free time.

OldMapsOnline est né de l'amour de l'histoire et du patrimoine des cartes anciennes. Le projet a débuté sous la forme d'une collaboration entre Klokan Technologies GmbH, Suisse et The Great Britain Historical GIS Project basé à l'Université de Portsmouth, Royaume-Uni grâce à un financement du JISC. Depuis janvier 2013, le projet est amélioré et maintenu par des bénévoles et l'équipe de Klokan Technologies GmbH pendant leur temps libre.
