The mere mention of Weh Island immediately conjures up images of diving and sunsets for me. Yet, that perception shifted the moment I arrived in the afternoon at Sabang Fair—the area that serves as the true, honest heartbeat of the island.

I’m revisiting the topic of Weh Island; although I vacationed there a few months ago, I still have so many stories stored up that are worth sharing with this beloved community.
I took a brief walk there—specifically during the scorching midday heat, around 11 AM, with the sun directly overhead. While the island was bright and sunny, the sea breeze never let up. Welcome to the Sabang Fair area; this isn't a beach for swimming, but rather an open field, a hub for activities, and the first landmark you see when heading toward the city center.

As I mentioned earlier, this isn't a beach area for swimming; rather, it is an open space—a hub of activity and a gateway—that greets you as you soak up the atmosphere of Pulau Weh.

The moment I arrived, the atmosphere shifted noticeably. The wide asphalt road was flanked by tall, shady pine trees on both sides. Honestly, what I loved most was how uncrowded, clean, and cool the road felt, shaded by the overhanging foliage. Along the roadside, there were also small stalls selling everything from iced coconut drinks and fried snacks to local island souvenirs.
It was midday, creating a wonderfully peaceful vibe; there were no honking horns or traffic jams—just the sound of the wind and the occasional passing motorbike.

The first thing that caught my eye was a large sign reading "Pantai Paradiso" (Paradiso Beach) in green and orange, standing right by the sea. It offers a stunning view of the water, which shifts in shades from light to dark blue. Honestly, I find the place incredibly peaceful during the day; the casuarina trees in the area provide natural shade, making daytime the perfect time to visit if you are looking for tranquility. In contrast, once night falls, the atmosphere changes: the sound of gentle waves fills the air, hanging lights illuminate the surroundings, and crowds of visitors arrive to soak up the unique ambiance of the Sabang Fair area.
Now, follow me as I explore another corner of this area, where I discovered a "Pulau Weh" sign set against a unique blue monument—which, to me, resembles a chalice or a crown adorned with blue and orange marine motifs, featuring a small spiral staircase at its base. While the area is very quiet during the day, it transforms into a favorite hangout for locals once night falls, drawing crowds to the Sabang Fair precinct.
To sum up my impressions of this place: for me personally, the charm of Sabang Fair during the day lies not in whether it is bustling or quiet, but rather in that very tranquility. It allows you to see the city's true face—an atmosphere that is unpretentious, peaceful, clean, and authentic. That is why, if you ever vacation on Weh Island, I believe this is a spot you simply shouldn't miss.
